That's a good point. There definitely has been a surge in aquarium born RBTAs, which is good for the hobby, however, the larger ones still seem to originate from the ocean reefs.

Happy Reefing!

If there aren't any environmental factors inducing them to split,
Then I'd say you just happen to have a strain that is genetically predisposed to splitting.

I've kept RBTAs for years, and have not had mine split to that degree.

I'm quite certain I still have my original "mother" from 10+yrs ago.
How large do they expand? Mature cloned from my RBTA can easily get 8-10" diameter. They don't stay small, and typically don't split until atleast 6" diameter.

The tank full of them, especially all bubbled up looks pretty spectacular! Looks great!

Back in the day, that would have been a cash cow.

Here's some questions for you...
How big is your system?
Aside from the RBTAs what comprises your bioload?
Skimmer?
What is your water change routine, how often, and how much?
(I think this may point us to some answers)

My tank is 75 gallons with a 20 gal sump about 5 yrs old. I have cheato growing in sump with 2 x 4" socks. My skimmer (Omega 150) kept overflowing back into my tank so I don't use it. My return pump turns over the water 10 x per hour and I have a Vortech MP40 for circulation. My light is a powerful LED made for plants. It replaced my 2 Blue Aqua Illumination lights. I change 5 gallons every weekend and use reef crystals. I Kalk with top off and manually dose mag and strontium every few days.

My reef parameters
temp - 78 F
PH - 8.1
salt - 1.25
calcium - 440
mg - 1500

Livestock:
Fish 3-4 years old (all bought when babies)
4 clownfish (range 2"-4")
2 engineer gobis (both 14")
1 yellow tailed damsel (2")
1 Naso Tang (unicorn tang female 10")
________________________________
Corals, 3-4 years old
1 Tree Coral (12")
1 Toadstool mushroom. (6")
1 Hammer Head blue&green (8")
Assorted polyps 50 heads
Over 100 RBTAs (1" - 3") & still splitting
