So I saw this over at advancedaquarist.com this morning .. thought it worthy of reposting here as it basically confirms what probably a lot of us were already suspecting: vermetid snails are bad for your reef.

not surprising. they made a mess of my tank and once I got them all out everything was looking much better

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that 100% coverage of anything on a reef is going to be bad. But everything in moderation is good. Its biodiversity and necessary for a balanced ecosystem. Vermetids have been in my system for years and the coral just grows right over them. Perhaps I'm just one of the lucky minority.

Totally agree, there are a lot of things that if reach plauge population are bad in our tanks but i think taking "everything out that is bad" isn't the point, in the wild these snails are there and corals and fish "deal" with it it adds bio diversity to the tank, i got a few here and there in my tank and most of my corals have encrusted right over the tube (I'm pretty sure my GSP is killing it off lol )

Idk just my 2 cents I find some of the things that are not added or usually are not a "show piece" are the coolest to watch, hermit crab fights...mini starfish moving on the glass.. watching a bristle star steal food and yank it back to the hole in the rock ...
