you can mod an ATX power supply by jumping out...
you can mod an ATX power supply by jumping out two wires on the 24Pin plug, i cant remember which ones but i have done it before, but you are better off just buying a 12VDC adaptor like the ones that...

they are usually made of steel or stainless steel, but some cheaper ones use led, if a magnet picks them up then they are steel or iron, but a magnet will not work on stainless steel or led.

I would replace your GFCI if you think they tripped for no reason, GFCI can also trip on an overload so you could have been drawing just over 15A and it is taking along time to heat up to a trip...
