It will really depend on how deep the scatches are. If they are deep enough to feel, even in the slightest (use a pin to drag across the surface) you will need to grind them out way before you start...

I have a monti cap that is slowly being overgrown with zoos, as well they are spreading onto other sps. It wouldn't be so bad but they are a ugly brown, not much to look at IMO.
