Considering a damsel can leave visible bite marks on my arm I'd say it's not impossible. They aren't the type to eat the shrimp but damsels are territorial so that could be the issue.

12hrs on/12hrs off. 4x 39W T5 each bulb is a different spectrum. Tank also gets natural sunlight from behind some days so that does extend the light period.

While I don't think they're a problem in the tank, I'm also not a fan of getting their fibreglass-like bristles in my hand. I don't have any that I'm aware of in my tank, lots of other critters...

It sounds like the o-ring isn't doing its job, or that part isn't tightened quite right. If that part is threaded make sure you use teflon tape on that thread.
