I use a dab of silicon on threads that don't get used very often. Teflon tape on the ones that do. I found the silicon works better for seals but needs to cure, so teflon is more convenient.

How are your magnesium levels? I have found that if they aren't up to snuff they might actually mask the other levels, giving an incorrect reading. What kind of test kit do you use?

I didn't know SEIO and Rio were the same company. I hade a Rio that seized a while ago, the ceramic bering just wore out. I wouldn't recomend them anyway, oil or no oil.

I'd like to try bare bottom so I might lend my manderine to someone just until I'm convinced that I have a good pod population. I guess its easier to add a sandbed down the road then to remove one.

If you have enough SPS its attension won't be focused on one coral alone, so it should really cause too much damage.

Thats exactly what it is. Bubbles getting trapped in the slime coat of the SPS. A turkey baster should keep them free of this but you might want to adjust your flow and micro bubble issues.
