Imo as others have stated in this thread live rock is the best choice, i had a great reeftank
in the past that for 12yrs it was very stable and i know the liverock from fiji,tonga,and vanuatu helped...

Last time i checked skim hard means the same as to skim dry,
which is running your skimmer to produce dry bubbles which means more compounds collected, and if you skim wet you are also skimming...

IMO if it's not broken then don't fix it, on the other hand if you feel your skimmer is not producing enough and your tank has a high load then you may want to upgrade. Your the person to ask this...
