My name is Rich, R I C H and I am an addict. I have been in the aquarium hobby for some time now, it all started with a free 20 gallon tank 8 years ago where my ex-girlfriend was planing to keep her hamster. Long story short, the hamster ran away in my apartment and I figured why waste a perfect tank... and it starts. I went from the 20g to as much as 6 tank ranging from 20-72 gallon fresh, brickish, and saltwater. It was fun for a while but it quickly gone outta hand with all the different types of water changes.

April 2009, we bought a house and I decided to upgrade from all my tanks to streamline into one large reef aquarium. So in comes the 210 gallons with a custom stand which I thought would be the "last" aquarium I will ever purchase, boy was I wrong about that. After many months of reading, learning, and up-grading all the equipment and husbandary, the 210 was shaping up to be a decent sps tank but it's not without flaws and issues. Those issues might have been insignificant and for most of us. It would have been okay but as merticulous as I am, it really ****ed me off.

A month back I was out at OC and saw the 300DD which I have been looking for. I was originally thinking about getting the one from porgressive reef but for the price I just could not refuse(Thanks Paul). I had a custom stand made, powder coated, and it turned out extremely satisfactory. I had everything setup and ready to move in but not with out a sense of trepidation when the thought of moving my 210 outta the way for the 300 into the same spot. So the plan was to get my buddies over for dinner and sprung this move on them. It took 8 of us to move the 210 out of the way and move the 300. Lesson learned #1, use pnuematic suction cup not the cheap princess auto ones. #2, sauce after the tank move. #3, Don't do it on Christmas day.

Anyways the switch-over was F-ING terrible. lost so many fishes including my prized Achilles tang. Mothers!!! I just don;t get it. 150 gallon tub with heater and tunze 6105, I figured that should've been okay but I guess I was wrong.

On the plus side, all the sps and clams has made it with just a few exceptions.

So I encounter the first major issue with the DART leaking. It turned out to be a manufacturer defect in the housing. 2 tiny pin hole was some how formed during the milling process. I guess the lathe operator had a couple too many the night before.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i331/bblinks/ed10c351.jpg
check out the wet spot on the housing.

I contacted Chris at Reefflo, even though they were closed during the holiday season, he still reply to my email and had the part and an extra seal kit shipped priority mail today. Now thats service. I have ran into countless dealers that just want to sell you the product and as soon as you pay the money they are gone with the wind. Altough the experience with my first reefflo pump was negitive but the customer service I recieved from Chris was good enough for me to recommand the product and company to anyone.

I used a bit of 2 part epoxy to seal it off temporarily till I get my new replacement and so far so good.

Yes they are. your patent is only valid in Alberta. BC has a different set of rules. hehe!

I was rather pleased with the out come of those leveling feet. I think there are 16 all together. Man, what a difference it made to level the tank, nice and easy took my buddies a few minutes while I was out side taking a smoke break. I gotta give props to my buddy Jason for sketching it up for me, Thanks buddy!

I was originally concerned about the weight distribution bu my welder told me that I could park a Dodge Ram Van on the stand without any issues.

Nice job, I love the deep dimension tanks, only think I don't care for is the way the braces are in the water, I reduced my flow and opened up the teeth in the overflows to lower the water enough so you don't see them on mine, what are the plans for skinning the stand?

I did modified the overflow a bit but I think I need to do a bit more to lower the over flow level. One thing I did do is change the durso over to herbie, what a difference that made. ULTRA QUIET. I would recommend any of you who is starting a new tank to use herbie.

As far as skinning the tank, I will give it an honest attempt this weekend, we will see how it will turn out! I want to pick up a couple of sheets of oak or maple. I was thinking to use magnets and counter sink them into the each panel, so it will hold them to the metal stand. I want to split the front into 2 separate pieces in the front and 1 piece on either end and leave the back open. just incase I mess it up, I have a guy who did my stand for the 210 will come over and help me with it.

I think I saw some maple sheets for sale at Rona, I can't imagine it being that expensive. The only problem I see me running into is maybe human error on fabing the skin and having to re-make it. Now that could get expensive. The more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards getting a profession al to make it for me. We will see how it goes. Thanks for the heads up.

Check Windsor plywood if you have one near you, sometimes they have good deals, I picked up some sheets of pre finished 3/4" birch for $29 a sheet last year, saves time finishing and they have matching iron on edge banding to cover the plywood edge, you could make yourself a couple finished panels in an afternoon, Lee Valley tools has the rare earth magnets to attach the panels to your stand as well.

Just want to give a little update on the tank. Few issues has surfaced. I had a brand new Dart pump which was purchased through BRS, unfortunately it was over milled and it had 2 tiny pin holes on the head unit which caused it to leak. Upon contacting Chris Reefflo he promptly sent out a replacement piece for me. Chris was a pleasure to deal with and even though it was during the holiday season and Reefflo was closed during that week he still answered my emails. It's companies like that who stands behind there products and are willing to take care there customers regardless of before or after sale which gives me the confidence to purchase another product from Reefflo or refer it to another reefer. I did use 2 part epoxy to seal it for the time being, besides that the pump was a bit loud when I first fired up but has since quite down a fair bit I am very happy with the performance.
Here are some pictures of defective part.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i331/bblinks/a1b89d0f.jpg
2 wet spots is where the pin holes are.

Second issue was with AI lights, out of the 9 I got, one of them doesn't want to be controlled. I tried a few different methods, even plugged the unit straight into the controller and it still doesn't dim. I called the LFS where I purchased the units from but turned out I had to contact AI direct. I have to say its rather annoying that you as a customer have to deal with the manufacture direct but in the end it was again a positive experience out of a bad situation. In defence of the LFS, they did email there supplier and that was the answer he got back from him to contact AI direct. So I emailed AI and was promptly replied. AI told me that it could be a cold weld on the chip, they apologized about the inconvenience, the new part will be shiped out the very same day.
I did take the AI apart just to see what it looks like. Not much to it really.

You hit the nail on the head. He does give off a snobby feeling when you first meet him. It gets better with more interaction you have with him. Jeff is a very knowledgeable person when it comes to this hobby, he has been in the hobby for quite some time now and I usually direct all my question his way. Although some of the question are elementry, he still trys to explain to me the best he can, it's only when you start to ask the same elementry question over and over again he starts to get annoyed, but for the most part I just google before I start asking.

I have been busy for the last week or so, didn't get much done. I have also been fighting off a new tank syndrome hair algae outbreak since I nuked all my rocks by fresh water dipping everything for 4 minutes to kill all the pests.

I am almost finished my skin for the tank, all it left is fill and sand then off to a good friend of mine's shop to get it paint it.

I finally did some testing last night alk is at 6.5, cal is at 500, and mag is around 1100. No wonder the hair algae is growing out of control, I bumped my alk up a couple of points and plan to do a water change later.

Here are a couple of recent photos.

Thanks for the compliment. The rock work took me a fair amount of time to get it right. I think thats the single most time consuming part of setting up a tank. I have done my fair share of fruit stand look so this time I wanted some thing different. I am even considering take out a few more pieces of rock just to make it look cleaner...

All right guys, just a little update while I am bored at work. shhhh don;t tell anyone Ken.:twised:

I have been running the system for a bit more then a month now, every thing is looking great. Lots of the sps are coloring back up again. I had a major alk dip just recently, it went from 9 - 5.5 in a little less than a week, I had to bump it up with soda ash from BRS, I guess its always good when the corals are using it up.

I also dumped my CPR refugium so to eliminate any chance of the thing getting stuck and flooding my floor again. Never again.

I did get a new toy last week.

DD stands for deep dimension, it's a factory marine land tank and they called it deep dimension due to the 36 inch depth. I am not sure what you mean by special but my wife did gave me the okay to upgrade. I thought that was pretty special.😃

I got some hair algae on the rocks, got a seahare a while back and it was doing a good job until I got home last night at 11:30 from visiting my good buddy. Just as I was putting the sps I had purchased from JL into a small container to dip, my wife looked at me and said I think the seahare is stuck on the tunze. I immediately grab a stick and poke it, long story short, it was stuck and yes it was dead. I had to fish the tunze out and separate the pump, It took every ounce of strength not to puke. It was stuck in a such a weird position, I had to cut the seahare in half just to get it out. GROSS!

So all in all, are you happy with your choice of lights or do you wish you'd gone another route??

I am very happy with the choice I made. These light are designed to grow coral and I can tell you first hand it does a better job then my halide(250 pheonix 14k) ever did. I like the controll, intensity, and the much less heat transfered to the tank. I am a huge fan of the modular design, it allows me to add or remove units as I see fit, but on the other hand mounting is a pain.

Unlike most, when I changed over to leds I did ramp up and down for a few hours but during the peak hours I ran them full blast. I strongly believe this is the only reason all the sps has kept its colors. If you are looking to switch to led I would recommand you instead of changing the intensity of the leds, do the same time period as your original lighting, do your sunraise and sunset as you wish but just hang'em higher around 18" awl then slowly bring'em down. I found that worked way better for me.

Anyways, I am 100% satisfied with my AI, If you gave me a choice to do it again I know I will pick the same route even though I am a tech junkie which I think says alot for these lights.

Always gotta be so critical. jeez man. If you haven't been lazy and read the whole thread you would've known how high they were mounted. YOU JACK!

I will recap, 9 ais mounted 8" AWL. I mounted them closer to the middle rather then the front and that's why on the front corner of the tank is only 140. Tank is 27 inches high and directly under the AI on the sandbed is 300 plus par.

BTW what time you want me to come over? Dinner on you tonite I guess.

It really surprised me on the top right corner blue stag taking up so much light. 950 in my mind is rather on the high side and for the brown stag with blue tips, some branches just to the right is still brownish but where its directly under the light is almost all baby blue. looks amazing.

BTW my AI's time table starts at 10am from 10% ramp up to 50% by 12pm, from 12 goes up to 80% at 1pm, 1pm to 5 pm is full blast at 100% then slowly ramp down to 11 pm for night mode. All lights are controlled by profilux. I do use cloud cover, coolest thing ever, but I do not use thunder storm since it scares the poop out of my fishes.

Bblinks
03-20-2012, 08:49 PM
I just found this online, so I guess the guy is okay.

Safe shrimps and crabs:
Symbiotic shrimp from the family Palaemondidae (Anchistus, Conchodytes and Paranchistus) or small crabs such as Pea Crabs of the family Pinnotheridae may be visible through the inhalant siphon in larger clams.
These animals live inside the clam and do not harm it, although what they eat and what they do for the clam is unknown.

So story goes like this...

I was at the local fish store and saw a nice looking wrasse, thinking nothing of it I asked for the price. $49 was the reply from a empolyee. I got it bagged up and started heading home. Just before I arrived home I got a call from the lfs telling me that wrasse was a rare rhomboid wrasse they had sold to me by mistake.

Long story short, I took the fish back to the lfs. I did decide to do more research on that particular fish since I just been going on a wrasse binge. I realize how much I like this fish, but the issue is the price has increased tremendously to a whopping $599 for the pair. I can't say that I like the price but it is a nice pair of fish.

So, question is should I or shouldn't I.....

So after a few times visiting JL and checking out the Rhomboid I just couldn't pull the trigger. Even though they are amazing fishes, it was just too rich for my blood. I was there when the guy picked them up, I was almost ready to wait for him outside and mug him. :twised:Just kidding!

On the other hand the tank is full of new sps frags thanks to the Victoria frag swap. It was so nice to meet other reefers whom share the same passion and love for this hobby of ours! Also like to thank Brad for putting all this together, your generosity won't be forgotten.

Tank has been up and running close to 4 months now, I must say its looking better and better everyday. All the sps are growing rapidly I just wish I can take some better photos so I can show all you guys. I have been talking to a few canreefer about getting a setup but I just haven't made up my mind on how much I want to spend yet...

I used photoshop. It has three auto adjustments that I use on most of my coral pictures. Auto-Tone, Auto-Contrast and Auto-Color. Auto-Color is the one that removes bluish hues and brightens the colours. It is very natural result.

Most online photo storage include tools to auto balance a photo. Picasa/Google I use to great success, same as what I do with Photoshop but with only one click instead of three.

Whatever tools you already have should include some auto correcting features, give them a go!
Keith.

Update
fish

New additions Labouti wrasse, and a lineatus tomorrow.

Achilles is not doing well. I am not sure why? It always had a bit of ick but last couple of days he stopped eating and now one of his eye looks infected, not sure what it is but it almost look like pop eye but milder. It's glossy and enlarged. I will be devastated if my little buddy dies, he eats right off my hand. I suspect the eye has something to do with carbon... I change carbon last time and the same thing happened to a wrasse but it healed not without it losing its sight. I would love to get some input on this.

corals

All corals are doing fine. SPS are growing very well. I didn't think I would be saying this but I am running out of room real quick here.

equipment

AI mounting rails with an extra sol blue.

Rich, pics looking great! Keep up the good work... Practice makes Perfect!!!
I am planning to van in late may or June... Bought some frags from Denis. Love to see your tank! I'll bring my camera and really play the part of being the typical Asian tourist. BTW... Just picked up a canon 180 macro L lens!

Anyways, thanks for all the help Wayne, looking forward to your visit on the mainland. I would love to have you over and check out my tank. Shoot the s%$^ and teach me some more stuff on the camera.

At least you SAW your Laboutei in your tank! Mine VANISHED without a trace.

The Lineatus is WAY better looking than the Rhomboid.

Wow, thats a lot of money dried up on the carpet....I know how that feels, even with a canopy I still had 4 barletts jump through the back opening on different times, but now its all plastic meshed fenced up. Fingers crossed. I still want a Labouti and a Rhomboid....just saving up right now...soon!

Sadly, I have you beat.......I've lost about $3,000 in fish over the last 2 months.

I am debating whether or not to just go COWLR (Corals Only With Live Rock), but then I get tempted with yet another expensive rare fish........
