Removed all the rose bubble tips from the tank, they were taking out my sps ever so slowly, they are really nice but the rate how they split and move around its just matter of time before they take over the tank. So, for now, they are in the biocube.

I didn't realize RBT were that toxic, are they actually burning the SPS they're touching? I have one RBT and plan on adding a bunch of SPS, going to be a problem eh?

The one I got isn't that bad but it still irritates the sps to the point which will cause death. If the bbt is stationary, you might just be okay but otherwise I would just remove it. It will save you headaches later on.

There's a simple solution for this problem.... I go to Rich's house with coral clippers and chop stuff....

But seriously either corals get moved around to make space or they shake hands and one takes over the other. Rich will need a frag tank soon at the rate corals are growing, lucky there is some floor room and plenty on the back wall.

You will have to start fragging....first world problems...lol

You can also let nature take over and survival of the fittest....

I am not a big fan of the latter, I always try to trim as I can but sometimes I get too lazy. Your placement of corals are very important, some corals just don't play well with each other. You will have to experiment.

Thanks man. Sometimes I think I am pretty lucky in this hobby. My Ato broke so I've been manually pumping top off water into the tank and today, while pumping, I totally forgot that I plugged in and within a few minutes 15 gallons of fresh water dumped in the tank. Such a rip head move. Lol salinity went down to 1.022 which is okay for now.....I hope🙊 I was gonna hook up the Ato straight to the 40 gallon drum but thank god I didn't. 🙈

I have tried all kinds of supplement from zeo to redsea. I think for the most part, they are supplements. Your core focus should still be on keeping calcium, alkalinity and magnesium in the correct and more importantly stable condition. Out side of that, colors of the corals can be adjusted with some additives if you are not happy with it and lastly, higher nutrient doesn't mean bad water quality, it just means there are more "food" particles for the corals to feed on. Hope this helps.

Been some time since the last update....life has been busy and the tank has been neglected for the summer months. I had some temperature issues with the tank and for a few weeks it was around 30-33 degrees. I lost a few colonies of monties due to bleaching but all and all the tank survived for the most part. Here are some pics shot on the past weekend, excuse the faded color but I am re-directing my focus back into the tank for the fall and winter season and hopefully bring it back to what it should be.

Also, started a new product by Brightwell.
http://brightwellaquatics.com/images/xport-bio-brick.jpg
Xport BIO Brick
Ultra-porous Biological Brick Media with Superior Performance Characteristics
Overview
Highest porosity and largest usable surface area, per unit weight or volume, of all filtration media available anywhere
Provides huge amounts of aerobic and anaerobic surface area for efficient bacterial colonization.
Provides over 71,000 square feet (6,596 square meters) of surface area per liter of medium. One brick has about 100,000 square feet of usable surface area for bacterial colonization.
When properly colonized, and used as directed, it will reduce toxic ammonia and nitrites to near zero in ponds and all aquariums, marine or fresh.
Also reduces phosphate significantly and dissolved organics.
Works excellently as the only filtration medium for the aquarium or pond or may be employed in addition to other filtration media.
Doped with Aragonite to buffer pH at the bacteria level, preventing acid buildup which eventually would kill the bacteria and reduce capacity. (Which is what happens in competing products)
Sizes
9" x 4.5" x 2.5"
Instructions Guidelines
Use one XPort Bio Brick for every 1,000 U.S. gallons ( 3,800 L ) of system capacity, more for heavy bio loads. Rinse material well with aquarium water or purified tap water. For superior results, seed the material using FlorinBacter, MicrōBacter7 or MicrōBacterCLEAN, as appropriate for your aquarium, by placing XPort Bio Brick in a plastic container, filling it with aquarium water, and then adding the full recommended dose of either bacterial product, based on the size of your aquarium, to that container. Allow to stand overnight and then add the seeded XPort Bio Brick to your system. You may also add the water back to your aquarium, if desired. It is recommended that you use sponge, fine filter floss or other mechanical filtration ahead of XPort Bio Brick to prevent clogging with organic material. For maximum results, also provide a good carbon source for growing bacteria, such as Brightwell Katalyst bio pellets or liquid Reef BioFuel or Florin Axis, as appropriate for your aquarium, as directed on their label.

My personal experience with the product has been positive, the only thing that I found odd was that it floated for 2 weeks before it finally made it's descend to the bottom of the sump. I guess its because the air trapped inside of it....who cares, it's good now. NO3 has dropped from 10 ppm to 5 ppm in 3 weeks and I will do another test tonight to compare more data but so far it is working as advertised. This product is suppose to have 10 times more surface area than siporax which is hard to believe. Anyways, product works and I have my situated right below my filter sock with my biopellets outlet pointed towards the same area which my skimmer inlet is also in the close by vicinity.

Okay, picture time.

Jess also pointed out that the blocks doesn't need to be replaced but there smaller sized cubes which is the same material just broke down into smaller pieces will need to be replaced as in their description which I found kinda odd. I am having good results from this one brick better than the marine pure so I am not complaining. 1000 gallons per brick does seem a bit ambitious...

Did some programming with it last night and I gotta say it's got lot of options, the automatic 24 hour cycle is pretty cool, it also comes with 2 preset ocean wave programs preset by maxspect, not too sure if I like them so I just saved my own. 00:00-08:00 both on at 30% synchronized, 08:00-12:00 60% 10s alternate, 12:00-20:00 80% 10s alternate, 20:00-00:00 60% synchronized. Let see how the corals react to it.

Here are the preset maps from maxspect.

I paid 229 at jl, you can run2 gyres with the controller or if you only have one you can opt for the xf250 model which comes with 1 gyre and the same controller. Newer model comes with new propeller and upgraded bushings.

Found on JL website. Looking forward to your review !

So far I am really liking it. The 24 hour cycle really allows you the ability to control these pumps with limitless options and for those who just want to plug it in and use the thing there are 2 preset maps ready to go. Built quality is rather heavy duty, extruded aluminium housing with black powder coating, buttons feels good. It also comes with a battery back up inverter. Owners manual has 16 languages so it might seems to be as thick as the bible but it's only 4-5 pages, I would highly recommend you watch the YouTube videos as it explains instructions in details.
Recommendation is a 8 out of 10 only because the price.

Rich, are you happy with the eurobrace? And your lighting?

I love the Eurobrace, would not have it any other way, rimless is nice but just hate the water spilling over.

Ati 8 bulb does a great job, I am happy with it. TBH I would rather went with the ati hybrid but the cost is just astronomical.

Rich, how are things working out with the Marine-pure block? Still happy with it?

Marine pure is still in the tank and for the most part it is working, but I don't think I would purchase it again, I am using brightwell NO3 brick and it has been proven very useful. Highly recommended.

Xactly, bigger tank needs bigger corals for a more mature look. More coral, less rock. The corals are beautiful, no issue there. ;)

Photo update as per usual.

Tank is stable at 7-8 dkh 400-420 calcium.

Trace of no3 and po4.

Colors are vibrant but always can be better.

Lighting change to 4 ati coral plus 4 ati blue plus, I think the corals are liking it. I did 18 inches off the water for the first week then lower it to the original spot about 6 inches above water line. I am not a patient man.

Slowed down the water flow at night so the fishes can sleep, noticed more polyp extensions and since I started feeding oyster feast at night it is even more noticeable.

Yes, I do use the Olympus tg4 camera and it's worth its money in gold. You will need to set the white balance but after that its easy as point and shoot.
Also, I have used yellow safety google lens as a filter and surprisingly it takes great pics even with my iphone, that was a trick I learned from Davej.

Hey Rich, how are the firefish?

I've actually never kept one, but read they pick one another off...
Do you have multiples of the same species? Or just one of each?
Do they leave each other alone?

They look so cool in the stores seeing a bunch of them hovering around.
Have always wanted a few of them.

Little guy, been here for a while but have a hard time getting around the tank, too much flow.

Lyretails for me is the only anthais that does pick off each other as long as food is abundant. I had 6 for the longest time but then decided to add a few more but 6 seems to be the magic number for me.

Let's just say I started off with 3 reds 3 purples and 2 helfriche....my helfriche is by far the more aggressive one but I rather that than vice versa.

Awesome pics rich, love those fish pics. Where's the Royal Grammer?

If the price of helfrici wasn't so much these days I would love one, also the exquisite fire fish with yellow bellies are pretty neat and they dwarf the regular ones.

Hey Rich I have a question for you... I know this build you went with a couple of tunze and gyre, and your last build you had mo40s... which do you prefer? I'm looking to upgrade my flow in my 75g and I currently have a tuze and a new korelia

I like the directional adjustability of my Tunzes and the reliability of the whole Tunze line of wave pumps. Gyres are new and so far imho it has proven to be rather reliable and the share volume of water those gyre moves is second to none. My experience with mp40 has not been too good, darn things were noisy and breaks all the time. However, I can't speak for the new gen ones as I have never owned one. For the price you are paying I would choose gyre follow by tunze than mp40. But all this is just my personal opinion. I know a few reefers on here are dieheart mp40 fans but they are wrong. Lol

Anyone that can take a half decent wrasse picture has my admiration. My pics all look like pink/orange/yellow streaks. Love the Oregon Tort, how long have you had it? I haven't managed to locate a frag yet...

You have the 200 series Gyre or the 100 series? I had an XF150 for a year in my tank, and found it noisy even with brand new (150) motor and mounting blocks. I installed a couple XF230 for a friend and they were really noisy too. I agree with you, Tunze are still hard to beat, and the MP fans out there are definitely wrong. :D Tunze has been making noise for a couple years now about a new controller in response to the programming/controllability of the MP and new Gyres, but I think they still have yet to release it. It seemed like it was close last fall, but I haven't heard much since. I'll be first in line on that bandwagon as soon as it's available.

I am so bad at testing but wife usually does it for me every 2-3 weeks , I try to keep it at natural salt water level, 7 dkh 420 cal and 1300 mag. water changes is done every 2 weeks some times 3. 35 gallons per change on a 140 total system. Dosing is done by BRS bulk chemicals. I don't dose much of anything else but I have a good stock of stuff that when I remember I dump some in. Recently I ditched the filter sock, getting sick of raising and washing. Lighting is a 8 bulb ati fixture. Bare bottom with shit load of flow (2 gyres, 2 tunze 6105, return pump is laguna 4800gph) skimmer is a bbk super marin 250. Lastly some marine pure bricks along with the new brightwell no3 brick.

I've found that there is a definite advantage if you can source your stock from someone who has a well established tank with thriving colonies. It's one less chance that you're taking. Rich's tank has been a well documented success story. His corals are hardy. I know if only a handful of people I'd ever source my corals from and he's on that list for a reason.

Your ATI fans are noisy? I can't even hear mine! I've heard other people complain about the noise too. I literally can't tell if they are running or not without looking. The only thing I can hear in my tank is the skimmer which is pretty quiet too. The Tunze ATO pump...that's another story! Holy crap that thing is loud! I have 3 of them, they are all loud! I agree with you on the pumps. It's a race to the bottom now, and I'm going to be awfully mad if some "poop" company puts Tunze out of business. I got the none-dimmable version so those fans are brutally loud at 9v which is recommended by ATI, I contacted ATI us and they said to run them at a lower speed but I have been told that they will shorten the life of the bulbs and ballast if it's ran below 9v. Are these the fans that look like they belong in a computer?
If so, I have had great success in quietening them down, by using a drop of oil.
You peel back the sticker that is on one side and add a drop of light machine oil, like three in one, or turbine oil.

I also find fans on my Ati a bit noisy. Have 5 of them in my unit... I replaced one with a computer fan before and still a bit noisy. I went to a store in Langley ( can't remember the name at the moment but not a computer store) and I opted for the cheapest one , they vary from $2 to $15 if I remember correctly , and apparently the more expensive one are more quiet, the one I got I think paid like 2.50 for it , fits good and is just a bit fatter than the Ati ones, and slightly quieter ...
Just to be clear mine are not super loud but I can hear them drawing air, don't expect to be dead silent lol...

I had a chance to check the temperature exiting my ATI sunpower fixture. I had it running on 12v which is annoying to say the least when it comes to fan noise. After I ran the infrared temp gauge and the read out was only 28 degrees I was a bit surprised. Now I have it adjusted to 9v and the temp is registered at 32 degrees. I know ATI recommends 36 degrees for optimum running temperature to prolong the life of the ballast and bulbs but I think I am comfortable at 32 degree and half the decibel level on the fan. Winner winner chicken dinner.

Since I lost almost all my corals its not a current problem but how do you prevent warfare and the associated RTN? Do you trim constantly?

I am usually not too concerned about coral warfare, survival of the fittest is my model. I know it sounds kinda harsh but sometimes that is the only way to go. However, I do try to remove some corals when it's shading out others on the lower level which I find can cause rtn due to lack of light. Other than that, just let them work it out amounts themselves.

Algae reactor report.

Working awesome thus far. 3 weeks worth of growth gave me triple of what I originally started off with. I took out 2/3 of the mass and wrapped the chaeto around the pipe and its getting packed again. I must say I am impressed. LED light went bunkers and starts a rave show in the sump so I bought the reefcrest strip from JL, really liking it. I would recommend the reactor to anyone. JL has the whole setup on sale for $169, pretty good deal consider it comes with pumps hose and I think even a little bit of algae but don't quote me on it.

Here is what my reactor look like.

Been tweaking colors with some Aqua forest stuff.

AQ build has been doing some magic on the tank. New growth showing up on majorities of the corals

Guys, please keep in mind everyone's tank is different. My system is fairly low on nutrient so what's working on my tank will work differently on yours. Keeping a log and monitor your corals closely when dosing new products.
