There are not weapons, they are firearms...lol
I will do my best to live up to the expectations.
That's why I went with macro rocks.....no pest....ever!

So I just finished reading your thread!!! Better than any bestseller I've read :thumb:
LOL took me about 3 days... I'd steal a bit of reading time whenever I could. Got off work last night at midnight and finally had to stop readying at 2:30am LOL
You had me sitting on the edge of my seat whenever you were met with a sudden crisis... I felt the sweat... rode the rollercoaster with you... and had to re-read 3X a few pages back when suddenly everyone was talking about the 'tank that was'. All I could think was... WHAT DID I MISS!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! :hurt:
Your 300DD was INSANE!!! I have been drooling over the pictures... even saved some. You are such an inspiration, an ambassador... you have set the bar to the upper limits in the sky!!!
And I am thrilled you are coming back!! :whoo:
I hope to meet the 'MASTER' one day...
And I am so looking forward to reading about your new build
BOOK 2 begins :typing:
PS.. Chris send me the link to your thread a while back but never got around to it. Then saw your thread recently under new posts. Chris you were right!!! :))

First of all, I like to apologize for wasting 3 days of your life that you will never get back when you would've been doing something a lot more constructive...lol
Thank you very much for all your kind words, I am definitely no master or ambassador but merely an enthusiast like everyone on this board. I would've never had the success in the 300dd without the help from all my friends on here.
This hobby is full of ups and downs, and for the most of part, that is what keeps us interested and brings us back. I guess you can say reefers are glutton for punishment.
I am hoping to have the same success with this tank as the previous but with more precautionary measures. I will try my best to keep it entertaining and enjoyable for all.
Thanks for tuning in, I am sure we will meet up sometime soon.

So I had a skimmer that I borrowed from my friend T.diddy Chris which was an Alpha cone 170, I figured it would be plenty enough to accommodate my tank.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i331/bblinks/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-12/19CD989F-D21B-44F8-9540-25B6D2DD46DA_zpsz2amixzx.jpg
After running the Alpha for a few weeks, I found that it would just overflow for no reason and bubble level controls are over-sensitive. I really didn't like it. So I decided to shoehorn the bbk 250 in there.
At first I was worried about the skimmer might be too big for the system and could possibly have an inconsistent output, but soon after all my concerns were alleviated. The skimmer is running like a champ and I couldn't be happier.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i331/bblinks/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-12/22B94BB2-BDBA-42F7-9CD9-7FB5FA5C6CD7_zpsor523pmq.jpg
Sump area isn't nearly as clean as Wardog but I did gave a honest effort.
Hooked up both brs dosers.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i331/bblinks/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-12/DA9C24A3-D43D-442B-A016-3CA18FDA7163_zpsmlbmn7lz.jpg
After trying out the bulk chemical from JL I must say I am not too happy with the mix...I am all for buying local and support local but when it comes to the quality of product I am putting into my tank, I want the best, period!
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i331/bblinks/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/E135E09C-0AFB-4155-A6D6-3A4FC1D285B8_zpsakvjjvvo.jpg
This is mixed from my calcium batch, as you can see the brown stuff is all the residue settling on the bottom of the bottle. I have mixed up BRS stuff and its crystal clear. I am not chemist so I don't know if the byproduct on the bottom matters but either way I don;t feel comfortable putting it into my tank. I will reflect my findings to Jeff and pretty sure he will step up and source out better stuff.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i331/bblinks/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/2B7F3555-771E-4636-87E1-8864A7BC2774_zpsg3i2uzei.jpg
Installed a new toy to try-out. Thanks Peter. Vertex skimmer neck cleaner. Yes, I am like to automate as much as I can.
Looking good. I have installed a neck cleaner for my BK Mini180 and it works like a champ, just find the blade to be a little too long so I'm having issues removing it from the sump... I'm thinking to somehow redesign the sump to accommodate this.
I am ordering you some bulk stuff from BRS shortly, need anything else? free shipping 175 :)

Been battling a good level of phosphate. my ultra low range was reading at about 0.1 ppm a few weeks back, so I decided to do a water change and start my phosban reactor with rowa. To my surprise, the reading went down for about a day and shot right back up. I was scratching my head thinking WTF. The following week and a half, I did 2 more water changes and triple the amount of rowa media, finally got a handle on it. last test was 0.022 and I'll do more testing to make sure I stay on top of it.

I was pretty disappointing when I mixed it up. I was told that they are pharmaceutical grade but probably farm animal pharmaceutical grade. I hope Jeff can bring in better stuff or maybe it makes no difference, it could just be me, anal retentive.

I too have the same sediment from J&L's Calcium stuff, but I've always had it as I've never used any pure bulk products. I also had it when using DowFlake Xtra and hoped J&L's stuff would be a bit cleaner ...
I never had any sediment when using Seachem's Reef Advantage Calcium, but the cost was horrid
I'll be following along to see what you find out
Are you still using that 180 degree black ABS stuff in your overflow ?
I've always questioned it's potable water qualities ...
If you like, I could pick up a couple street 90s from Corix on my way home
2 would lock together to create a replacement with no glue needed
And it'd be a good excuse to come by to check out your new setup

Hey Rich. Tank looks super sweet! Is there a reason you went eurobraced instead of rimless? Was it suggested because of the size of your tank or because of glass thickness? Or was it just to keep water from splashing over the edge of the tank?

I agree with you 100% rich. I love the look of my rimless tank but I wouldn't buy another one as the fish constantly splash water over the edge making a wet floor and an ugly looking water marked tank. Sure does take the sexy right out of the tank.
I would do the same as you next time and get a eurobrace.

New fish added, Helfrich firefish. I bought 2 of them knowing that they will fight but I still wanted to try. Upon first introduction, I could only find 1 of the 2. I looked everywhere but no luck. Damn fish swam through the overflow and ended up in the filter sock and the wife found it the next day. She tried to put it back into the tank, the damn thing flopped around and finally gave up. That was the fastest 100 bucks I have ever wasted.

Hey buddy.
So I have been collecting a fair bit of sps frags and the plan from the start was to collect as much as I can and once I am "happy" with the selection I will start a 4-6 weeks dipping regime. I will have all the frags mounted on plugs on a frag rack so nothing is attached, every week while I am doing my water change all the corals will be moved with the rack into a 20 gallon tank for a 15 minutes dip session than rinsed off with more recycled tank water before placing them back into the display. Once that's finished, I will assume that my tank will be pest free....
So next step for any new specimens will go into a nuvo 10-20 gallon all in one tank for 4-6 weeks for quarantine. I will most likely only get fresh cuts and leave the colonies alone.
I think this is the only way to keep your tank pest free.

Hey Rich, I'm kinda confused. Can't the aefw just jump ship onto your rocks even before you start dipping the frags? Maybe I'm missing something?
Well, that's an excellent question. There just isn't any exact scientific data on the life cycle of aefw. Most are just what hobbiest has discovered and speculated.
Imo, aefw needs to be close to the coral so they can feed frequently, I don't think they store enough energy in their body to sustain for more than a couple of days and adults will only venture out if the food is depleted or its looking for healthy corals to lay eggs on. One thing we know is that they like lay eggs close to flesh so newly hatched 1/3 of mm babies can start feeding almost instantaneously.
So my approach is to dip for 4-6 weeks on a weekly bases including the rack which the frags are mounted on. First 4 weeks to kill off any worms ( might not even be any) from juvenile stages to adults and last 2 weeks will make certain to rub out those straggler babies that might have slipped through the cracks. One thing we don't know is how the babies feed on the corals and if they infiltrate below the skin to feed until they become juveniles or do they just cruise on the skin surface. I really hope it's the latter but who knows.
Also, another important factor will be the initial collection of the Sps corals which in this case are all fresh cut. Even though they came from reputable sources, I always like to dip them in 2 different dips, one being revive and the other is iodine. Everyone has their owe preference on dipping but I found that using slightly higher dosage than recommended and turkey bast the corals while in the dip show far more effectiveness than if you just let it sit. Of course observe for eggs and if you find any eggs just toss that coral. Don't ever try to save it unless you are planing to quarantine. It's just not worth the risk even if it's an expensive frag.
Anyways, back to your question, yes, they are free to move around but I am pretty confident with what was described above I should be 99% pest free if I follow the program. Hopefully it made sense to you.

I have noticed my tank water not as crystal clear as I like it to be. I do run carbon and I do do a thorough cleaning session along with my weekly water change but still it's cloudy. do do  So I decided to run a uv and the very next day of running the uv (36W) the water cleared up. Guess it was the bacteria bloom that kept the water cloudy.

Thanks Greg, I think I need one more anthias and its gonna to be a sunburst (fathead) I had one back in the days when I first set up the 300, unfortunately they didn't last long but with my current feeding regime I am sure they will do well.

It's worth the $40 that I spent on it. I like this unit cause its easy to use and it will not scratch up your glass. I would say this is one of the best product for 2014.
I also have this unit on two of my tanks and they are awesome... very small chance to scratch the glass (although there is still a chance).
Also not afraid to go near or in the sand.
I think tunze could have made the unit float, however as it really sucks when it drops while trying to move sides...
Also careful with the blade as its quite sharp.
My 45g cube is made of 10mm starfire glass.
Will the Long version will be sufficient?
Just needed to ask because I had the Hammerhead for my old 120g with 10mm glass but it didn't work well which is why I bought the Tigershark for my cube.
My tank is a 120g 12mm starphire glass and it works well.. Obviously its not 100% bulletproof and it has flaws but in my opinion its much better than any magnet with a pad on the back of it...
The one flaw is the fact that it doesn't float and my tank is 2" deep and the stand is very high, edge is at about 6'1- 6'2, so its a bitch to remove the screen and reach to the bottom...
But yea to answer your question, the long version will work very well and i haven't had the meet of a strong magnet yet so I don't regret buying it...
All my other magnets make perfect egg crate stands though with a little glue :)

Ok here is a question for you guys, can you use it on curved glass?
Curved glass like on a bowfront? Or curved like a RSM 130 at the corner?
The magnet has two points of contact only so i will work really well on curved glass of a bow front but I don't see.it working very well on a 90 degree curved edge, nano might work to a certain extent.

Tank is finally coming into it's own, water parameter is slowly getting inline. I am happy with how everything is coloring up. Couple of new things I have started to use on my tank I like to mention. First is the redsea color program. I was shocked how much it has impacted my tank but of course you have to be on a low nutrient tank or else I think it will bring on the algae. Second is BRS hc gfo, this stuff works extremely well and since it's dry, you get more compare to other brands. It also takes only about 500ml of water before it clears up compare to Rowa which can be a gallon or 2. Funny thing is that rowa states no rinse required but I'll be damned if I am gonna turn my tank into the red sea.
New fish added, yellow coris wrasse and another borbonious. If someone tells you that adding one borb and one has been added already its okay they are a friken liar. The larger established borb is **** kicking the other one, why can't everyone just get along... oh well. Still waiting for some sunburst anthais, I hope they will be okay to add...:twised:

Just skimmed through your thread, starting with the new tank, and you seem to have forgotten to list all the equipment you are now using. I mean I know what you've got, but other folks drooling over your tank would like to know I'm sure! Any chance of an official list?

I used to love glowbowl when I lived in Edmonton lol. Jesse "Wheelman" picked up some cool film sheets that acts as a blue light filter. It's been pretty cool to be able to capture these pics under heavy blue light and actually reflects our perception.

Lost both sunbursts, sucks big time but life goes on, I fished out the trigger and the flame out of the tank and I think the stress took a toll on the sunburst.
All my other fishes are happy and alive. few spots on the achilles but that's a given. Damn fish is probably born with it.
I have added more rocks to the tank and happy to say all frags are mounted, urchins are still knocking them off here and there just to keep me busy.
New toys for the tank. 1 more gyre, laguna 4380gph return pump, 2 AI hydra 52
(quality assurance demo:lol:) replaced the 3 vegas in my home made hybrid.
I really wasn't looking to replace the return pump but the speedwave return crapped out so it was a forced fed. After my beautiful plumbing job and right before I fire it up I said to myself man this is an overkill, 4300gph might just blow the pipe right off the bulk head. Well, it turned out pretty good, lots of flow but it was working flawlessly.....until several glass crunching sound and a shower of glass shards and little black balls shot out the return pipe. my wife was like wtf was that? Boom! it dawn on me that I left a thermometer in the return and totally forgot about it. First thing came to mind was mercury but after consulting with several other reefers we came to the conclusion that its only alcohol and metal beads I had a sense of relief. Lesson of the day is do not leave any loose in a high volume pump in the return chamber. Happy to report nothing was kill or injured.
Second Gyre was added only because I didn't like the look of asymmetric. I like the balance look and man does the tank have flow, so much flow that some of the frogspawn is literally blown right off the skeleton so I promptly dialed everything back. Gonna have to get rid of all the lps in the tank and then I am gonna let it rip. :twised:
I was fortunate enough to be given the chance to demo a set of hydra 52s so I replaced the 3 vegas and let me tell you I am impressed with those lights. Those lights are bright. I have them dialed down so the coral can acclimate to the new lights, I will let you guys know how the coral react.
Enough talk...here are some night glow pics with the hydra 52 ultra violet light on 100%
