Can't wait for you to get up here to Edmonton and set up!!
Would love to see your corals in person!

Tank Party at Doug and Laurie's after you've settled down? We'll bring BEER!!
And NOT the Apricotty kind, either!

 I thought that was the best kind

Sounds like fun

well you should have gone for a drive with S & J this w/e.....then you could have seen them in person:wink:......they picked out some sweet stuff btw

Laurie and I chatted about it and the tank party sounds like a great idea and a must do:biggrin:

Tank Party it is!!
Laurie, I'll be saving those Apricotty beer just for you!!

Boy, if you ever have any mishap moving the corals, and a few accidentally just happen to frag off, call me first, I'd be buying some off you to help off-set some moving cost.
...maybe just a little,,,but everything helps!

Yeah, the Greens were nice enough to help pick out a few for me, since I NEVER get to go anywhere, they feel sorry for me, LOL.

ya Grizz pretty much summed it up.......lost EVERYTHING!.....filled a large coleman extreme cooler nearly half full of dead stuff......was my darkest few days in this hobby......would have shut it all down, if it werent for a couple reef Girlys......... Laurie and Carmen talked me into continuing on in the hobby and Im gald they did.... Hey Doug,
You were not kidding about those frags that the Greens got for me!
Do you have a name for those?
Can I hijack and ask you to give me a few tips as to keeping these so awesomely light-colored??
I have 250W MH, and have been able to consistently turning them light brown in the past:redface:. So would they need less light?? Or is it my nutrient load that I have to watch??
Thanks, Lenny.

Hey Doug,
You were not kidding about those frags that the Greens got for me!

there is soooo much sweet stuff at the shop atm...... as for the IDs........the blueish girthy one is a humilis......the other two I have absolutely no idea:biggrin:......ummmmm.....acropora sureisgonnabenicewhenitgetsbigus:mrgreen:

jack away..........well.....to be honest, the humilis and mini colony will get darker then what they are now.....the humils will likely be a teal to med blue....may develop green tips......the mini colony should be a deep purple with bright green polyps......Im not positive about the other one....I took home one of the light colored ones too and I think maybe the branches will be a light to medium cream color with purple tips.......as far as keeping them light colored.....you could always run Zeo......that will give you those light pastely colors......how soon in your tanks life did you try sps?.....I cant remember now if you had any leathers or not???

and just cuz its the way I roll:cool:.....a couple more pics

i gave my 'pearlberry' a scolding and mentioned how well yours was doing - I'm actually seeing it start to bud and colour up now! Might have been the fact that I did my very first water-change tonight (was running the original 'cycle' water until now).

And I never wanna read 'hot granny' again

Ha ha, good name as any!
No leathers in DT. LOTS of fish, though.
Hopefully third times the charm and they'll stay pastely-colored.

I run Bio-pellets, GFO, and carbon.
Someday when I get rich and famous, I'd like to try Prodi-Bio lines. Right now, I've already spent the 2012 budget....and Boxing Week is soon to be here...sigh.

nice pics buddy i havent seen any of the "fruit loops" either in a while one of my faves:):) funny once im outta the zoo collecting all these rare and awesome zoas are now easily accessible. if i was to start collecting again tomorrow.... i bet the market would be all of a sudden dry lol ;ppp

Thanks bye.....they are one of my faves too.....that why I put them way in the back of the tank.....so I can say to people ...."naw man....I cant frag those, they are way to hard to get to"......I dont know, most vendors seem to have clued in that zoas are hot and there are some serious zoaholics out there.....I dont think the market will dry up.....

Doug your picture taking is awesome man. Love the scolly too:biggrin: the zoa's that you have are amazing colors man.

Wow.. Great looking corals! I only hope my tank will look this good one day!

Where do you get a lot of your SPS corals?

Also.. how do you take such good photos?

thanks for the comp guys.....Ive said it before but .....its easy to take good coral pics when you can dunk your camera and get to within a couple inches of your subject to take the picture:lol:....the scoly is my prized coral ....I sure hope it takes the move to E-town well.....I'll be super bummed if I loose it...

working for Red Coral has its advantages:biggrin:......most of my coral has come from there, but not all of it.....in fact a lot of my "high end" sps has either been bought elsewhere or from canreef peeps.....most monthes I do get a paycheck from Kevin....Im not really that bad for taking stuff home....although in November my check for the month was $60:lol:......this is entirely because Im trying to stockpile things that I will need for the tank in E-town......Ive been buying things like rowaphos, epoxy and glue, carbon, salt, spare heaters etc, etc, etc....I feel more like a dealer when Im at the shop than a pimp, feeding the coral junkies fixes:wink:

For the big move to our town, would you need extra things like battery operated air pumps?? I've got quite a few of them (6+), so if you need them, lmk.
I also have extra small heaters, 10' (or is it 12'?)trailer for furniture and tanks:mrgreen:. 6' diameter pool-style tub to put everything into until you got the tanks set up...

thanks for the offer Lenny.....have I ever mentioned how much Canreef people rock?........ I just may take you up on that......but like Laurie said.....we're gonna try and get the big tank running and cycled with the dry and live rock that is cooking in E-town already( about 50lbs dry and 30ish lbs live).......my coral is going up and being dispersed to various babysitters in small batches each time Laurie and I visit each other....the livestock from the small tank will be going up there shortly and into Laurie's 34g cube.....the goal is to have only the rock from the system and fish to move when I finally shut the 110 down.....I will then be tank-less for a while, while I get my house moved up there......man thats gonna be weird not having a tank:neutral:.....

so I have made up my mind about the lighting for the E-town tank...I had decided for sure that bulb changes would kill me on a tank that size so I was gonna go LED.....I waffled back and forth several times between the AI Sols and the Radion.....its somewhat a good thing that I waffled for so long as it gave time for people to have these units and start giving some feedback......I decided on the Radions(wallet is gonna hurt for monthes)......I been playing with one for a few days now and I am super impressed with the features and program-ability on it.....obviously one isnt enough for the 110g so I have it over the 25g.....Im thinking of starting with four for the new tank.....if four isnt enough then I will pull one off and put my T5s in the back al le Levi.....I rent so I couldnt hang the unit.....this is what I came up with with inspiration from that Mr. Salty tank dude.....its kinda ghetto but it being over the 25g is only temporary, so it is good enough for now...I used a plank of wood and a pair of TEK legs that I already had......it actually was so easy that I may do something similar for the new tank , except a little fancier

thanks guys......like I said this one is just a temporary thing ....just so I could play with the light......probably wont do too much more to it.....but ya it doesnt look too bad, so thats what got my considering doing the same thing for the big tank..... would probably do a wider board and the holes staggered slightly front to back.....either 45 off the square corners of the board or round them off.....router a rounded profile on the edges, just cuz I can.....small 1/2 "x1/4" trim around the lights just to keep them in place.....Im thinking maple for the wood with just a marine grade varnish to keep it natural.......that would look cool with the black tek legs and black lights......

how did I know you would say something about the club.......can I just turn in half the badge???......it only on one of my tanks.....and the small one at that:mrgreen:

Ive been doing alot of thinking lately about what the stock list for V3 of my reef might look like as far as fish goes.....V2 has way too many fish for it own good.....most are in the "must keep" category, a few are in the "must be re-homed" category and a couple ( with one fish in particular) Im really struggling with what to do with..... heres how my current list shakes down....

5 green chromis:.....must keeps....these guys started as a group of 14 and whittled their way down to 5 rather quickly....the five survivors have been five for a few monthes now.....they still on occasion swim as a group(in between brief spats), which I think is cool..... I may try and enlarge the group in V3 and see what happens

4" "Winky" the one eyed banded shrimp goby: ....must keep.....Winky spent over a year at the old shop because nobody wanted to buy a one eyed goby....I took pity on him and brought him home....he's been with me ever since.....he has a little trouble tracking and catching food, but despite this, has turned form a shy reclusive fish to a bold, cantankerous old bugger....

3 1/2" royal gramma.....must keep......just cuz he's pretty....and mellow....

2" yellow assessor......must keep.....same as above

3" flame hawkfish.....must keep.....cuz he's too cool for school:mrgreen:

3" leopard wrasse..... must keep.....one of those harder to keep fish thats doing incredibly well

3 1/2" melenarus wrasse.....must keep .....too pretty and too beneficial not to keep

4" powder blue tang.......MUST keep......another harder to keep fish....that is finally doing well for me.......not a blemish on him and super playful.....my hands down favorite fish in the tank.....

3" Lubbocks wrasse......must keep.....just cuz

2 1/2" sunrise dottyback..... must re-home.....he's got quite the attitude.....most of my fish can handle him......one cant.....my yellow assessor.....the only fish in the tank thats smaller than the dotty.....I like my assessor too much so the dotty has to go....

3" coral beauty.....must re-home.....bought this guy as a "deep water" coral beauty....colors changed to a regular beauty....I would much rather have a potters, so ..... he's on the nix list

2 1/2" african flameback angel ..... must re-home.....stunning looking fish but he picks at EVERYTHING.....so he 's gotta go....

now on to the tough decisions........

4" yellow tang......my plan was to re-home this guy and introduce a trio of small yellows.... the shop got in some small Hawaiians and I took three up to E-town at X-mas and put them in Laurie's 80g....the thought was to wait til the tank had settled down a bit and add the trio that had been co-habitating for a couple monthes all at once......one yellow didnt do the three hour drive well and ended up dying the next day....we went to RCE that day and Steve had a few of the same Hawaiian yellows in so I thought I would grab another one, before the other two had a chance to settle in....so there were three again......another one ended up dying a couple days later and I decide not to spend any more money on tangs, so that left two......which didnt work out so well....the dominant one picked on the sub for a couple weeks and the weaker one then died from stress........so now I have a small yellow in E-towm and a big yellow here in Ctown......not sure what Im gonna do about the situation now

now heres the one Im REALLY struggling with.....Chevy......my 5 1/2" chevron tang......I love him to death but the reality is, even a 260g tank will be to small for a fish that has the potential to reach 15" .....my head says, re-home him while you have the chance.....my heart doesnt wanna let him go.....he probably wont reach a size to where he will be an issue for a couple years, but then Im faced with the more difficult task of trying to re-home a 8-10"(just guessing here) fish instead of a 5" fish..... I told Laurie this morning that I was considering re-homing him and she dang near killed me....Im torn......

looking for insight and opinions......what would you do?

I don't know if this helps or not .. but ... in ~15 years in the hobby I have yet to see a Chevron tang anywhere near that big. I thought they maxed out at more like 10"-11" anyhow but that's in the wild. I see him getting a little bigger on you but not by much.

I think it was the surgeonfish/rabbitfish book that listed them at a 15", but, you both are probably right.....highly unlikely that our captive fish will ever reach full potential....regardless, my Chevy is the biggest chevron Ive personally seen......I guess ultimately , I just feel that a 10" fish deserves a bigger home than a 260g.....although the reality is, how many people out there have a tank much bigger than that?....I mean I know there are quite a few here and there but the percentage of tanks larger than Im doing are small

In my experience when you get rid of fish that you absolutely ador you just end up trying to replace him/her down the road anyway...

your right too man.....I know I would miss him....... even tho he's a big lipped, lumbering, clumsy(I have seen him with more than a few scratches on his head), bully of a fish....I would want another one:mrgreen:.........I have no idea what Im gonna be doing as far as work goes, so a $200 tang may not be possible financially for me up there....

Doug when you re talkng about chevy I look at butt head my Kole he is 10 years old and he is the size of a whopping 5 " if that and they are said to grow big but mine have now reached that size. Just sayin I would keep him . but im going through that say thing I have to downgrade and would rather a a crap load of smaller fish my busy like in the tank.. P>S

That Scolly is one sexy piece of coral I think i must have it.

Just Sayin:biggrin:thanks Mike

Let Tony and I know when you guys are ready to sell those buggers :-D

might be sooner rather than later.....Ive been digging around a little because the reef safe with caution thing was bugging me...I must say there is surprisingly little about them on the net in relation to the aquarium..I found a thread on another forum where a guy said one of these urchins ate his blue linkia seastar......of course this is just on a forum and not anything solid but this may be the with caution part of the equation.... Ill keep digging....in the meantime Im nervous because I have a blue linkia in the tank:neutral:

so I finally made up my mind about skimming on the big tank......my original thought was to keep my BK mini 180 and get another skimmer rated for 200-300g...I was gonna do a vertex alpha cone 180......but after doing some reading, the general consensus is that one big skimmer, rated for your tank size is better than two small skimmers adding up to the size of the tank.....still not exactly sure why, but anyway, thats what the masses say, so it must be true right?.....Ive decided on and ordered a vertex alpha cone 300, rated for 600g http://www.vertexaquaristik.com/Products/ProteinSkimmers/InternalSkimmers/AlphaSeries/Alpha300.aspx .....that ought to be enough of a beast for my needs.....I should get it at the end of this month:biggrin:

now see!!!.....I had a convo with a guy that distributes some of the higher end skimmers a couple years back and he said not to over rate the higher end skimmers.......dont you just loooove all the contradictory little tidbits in this hobby:lol:......the system will likely be around 400g if I do a small satellite tank like in V2......and I tend to stock my tanks a touch on the heavy side so.......

have you ever had one of those corals that every single person that has seen your tank has bugged you for a frag of???....."are you fragging that one?"......"well when you do frag it, keep me in mind"...... my most requested coral would be my granny.....recently someone was over picking up a frag and saw it.....he jokingly pushed me pretty hard to frag it and I didnt budge on my "Im not fragging it yet" stance.....I got a PM from said coral junkie this morning with an offer that I couldnt refuse( the gent at one point offered me his wife:surprise:..... (which I declined, for the record:mrgreen:).....so I fragged it today.....ended up with a couple frags....a larger one that will go to Mr. Pushy (j/k:mrgreen:)...and a smaller one that will need a place to call home.....problem is the list grew so long for this one, I cant remember who was at the top of it:redface:......someone in another thread said something about a frag auction.....that would be somewhat pretentious tho methinks (although fun)......anyway, I thought I would snap a pic of it before I snapped it up.....

so Ive been having a huge aptaisia problem lately.....Ive tried Kalk paste.....Ive tried aptaisia destroyer.......Ive tried a bug zapper.....all these things just seem to anger the pests and they come back with a vengeance.....I was out and about and popped in to a competitors store and they had a small CBB....I asked the gent to feed him and he ate some brine.....so I nervously took him home, wondering who of my crew would jump him in.....my powder blue tang was the first to start the harassment....he pestered the CBB for a couple days, then on the third day the PB seemed to have calmed down and the CBB was cruising around the tank acting normal.....I thought I was in the clear......wrong!.....then my yellow tang started to chase the CBB.....between the two tangs the CBB was stressed to the point of not eating and was starting to look thin.....I had to do something so heres what I came up with....

this was not an easy fix......I couldnt just slide on big piece of eggcrate in because of the euro-bracing on the tank and because of the rockwork....so I had to finagle three small pieces in and ziptie them together inside the tank....do you have any idea how hard that was???:twised:.....it took dang near an hour to do......there are some small openings at the bottom of the eggcrate where the smaller fish can get through but the big bullies cant.....Im not sure how long I will leave the divider in there.....I feel bad that my tangs are in a three foot tank atm but I need this CBB to fill in a bit and most of all start helping me with my nem issues....

another update.......back in V1 of the tank I got in on a group order from Ottawa Inverts and got a frag of yellow birdsnest......I loved this BN and it quickly became one of my favs in the tank.....I of course lost it in the big crash and have been trying to find a similar piece ever since.....I was recently over at another canreefers place buying some books he had for sale and I managed to convince him that his colony from the same OI order was big enough to frag.....he did so and I now have it back......thanks a tonne Scott!!!!.....you rock!!!

Wow...looks like it was a real PITA to get the egg crate in there....lol, well at least the CBB should have a stress free time pickin away the the little boogers. Not sure if it's the time of year or what, but I've been having the same problem the last few weeks.....I haven't seen an aptasia in my tank for a long time.......now poof! I found five, the aptasia X seems to work, but there have been a few resistant SOB's that keep coming back :twised:

The first week with a new fish is the worst. Seems if they can get past that hazing then generally speaking it will get better. The eggcrate SHOULD help and ... well .. yeah, you can feel bad for the tangs but it's only for a few days, at least there's that.

Nice score on the yellow birdsnest .. I like these a lot. One day I might have to look for one myself as I've only been able to admire them in "other people's tanks".

I suppose it's all relative.....when I was dosing the sps grew like weeds.....the growth has been noticeably slowed to me....Im not sure there is a wrong or right....I really think that if you are just slow about adding your fish, you have good live rock(Im really not a fan of dry rock) and things are relatively stable, that goes a long way....

my bulb mix is a 50/50 split of KZ "new gens" and KZ "super blues"....2x 3' teks with 6 bulbs each for a total of 12 bulbs

I just got a small colony of RedPlanet yesterday....and was wondering how far below your lights you have yours to get the coloring (I have very similar lighting)
What kind of flow do you have it in?

Thanx, Chris

One of those unknown blue acros you sold me initially turned brownish and now the tips are turning bright green. You just never know what your coral is going to do in a different tank and over time.

thank Chris..... ATM its sitting on my frag rack which is on one side pane of the tank, right at the tippy top of the tank.....as for flow.....well.....there is over 10000gph of turnover in the tank and the frag rack is sitting about 3" above a MP40....the frag rack actually vibrates

I didnt have much room before either.....but a bunch of my coral went on its northern migration which freed up a bunch of space in the 25g..... at $25 a nem and one blue and another blueish one, I just couldnt walk away empty handed.....Laurie's a sucker for maxi-minis so I will likely give them to her for her collection

noticed something in the tank tonight.....I sold my big birdsnest colony and the gentleman picked it up tonight.....the birdsnest was the local hangout for my group of chromis....all of the chromis interactions and squabbles seem to be centered around and inside the colony.....now that the colony is no longer there they have spent the last couple hours swimming as a group again(they did briefly when first introduced) and there has been no squabbling.....amazing to me how even removing a coral can effect the dynamics of things in a tank....

so, yesterday was D-day for my SPS.....I moved probably 95% of it up to E-town and also took the 25g and stand.....Im happy to report that when Laurie and I went back to Red Coral E-town today everything looked just as it should.....*breeths sigh of relief*.....no RTNs so far.....now for the next phase.....fish, rock and zoos......this worries me even more.....I have two or thee fish that I can not loose .......my leopard wrasse was given to me by a close friend here, my powder blue came from a tank shut down and is the most perfect PBT I have ever seen...some of you my know that "powder" tangs had given me fits in my reef career... I had killed a half a dozen of them over the years and had actually sworn of trying again until this fish came into the store......and "Chevy", my big lumbering dumb arse chevron tang....he was one of the first fish I added after the tank crashed and Ive seen him through his color change and get to almost 6" now....I would be upset if I lost anything but devastated if I lost any of these three.....which brings me to a conundrum.....Steve at RCE has offered to temporarily house all my fish in the QT system until I feel the big tank is ready....now, the problem is this, and I dont want to seem in any unappreciative of Steve's offer but the though of all my fish in smallish tanks that have likely had some sketchy fish(health wise) in them doesnt entirely make me feel comfy........but the big tank isnt ready yet and Im worried about dumping 150lbs of LR that has just been moved three hours into a tank that has 100lbs of rock in it that isnt fully cycled yet along with my fish......I have a whole 30 vial set of "prodibio start" that I had intended for this very purpose but I am skeptical of using it.....what whould you do?

Actually the 100 pounds in the tank came from Red coral and has been kept in a rubbermaid with SW heater and powerhead for the past 6 months. I've had that 100 pounds in the display for a week now and tested everything and got 0 readings. Seems like the rock is cycled but even I was shocked that ammonia nitrite and nitrate was all at 0. However I'm sure when he moves his rock up it will cause a spike or mini cycle of some sort. Then we still have to scape it and add sand

like Laurie said, there is about 100lbs of rock in the 260 atm....all readings were at 0 a week after the rock went in (Ive had this rock sitting in bins waiting for at the very least 2 months (longer for some of it)....the 110g has about 150lbs of rock between the display and sump....this is the rock that Im worried about....I have the means to move all of it with water covering the majority of the rock (I have 10 rubbermaid bins and three cooler that are dedicated for the aquarium) the prodibio start claims that you can add rock from the LFS and fish in the same day and have pretty much no cycle....its a three part procedure that involves a bacteria, food for the bacteria and an ammonia neutralizing product....Im just still nervous about putting my faith in the product....after all these are my babies Im dealing with:wink:

It's too late for this now but it's too bad you hadn't found a friend to setup a fish storage tank to keep them a month or two that was cycled and of a suitable size. Sounds a bit scary putting them in the large tank and less scary to keep them at RCE. Glad the sps are doing good so far!

I could babysit as many as you needed buddy I have no fish in my tank that would bother them:)

thanks for the offer mang but the other thing that I worry about with the "keeping the fish at RCE" scenario, is the simple fact that I will then have to move the fish and stress them out twice.....I hate putting a net to a fish....I think we vastly underestimate the stress we put on our fish when we chases it around a tank and net and move it.....game fish are known to die after release from lactic acid build up and I would assume that our aquarium fish experience the same thing....some fish simply will die from the stress of being moved.....so keeping them anywhere else but the 260 is gonna force me to move them twice......

and "lots" is an understatement:razz:

I actually have less fish then then other people keep in the same size tanks, however I do have fairly large fish which take up space. I have 13 fish in my 230g reef (5 of which are large), 6 fish in my 230g fowlr (2 of which are large and fairly mean), and 8 (small to med. size) fish in my 80g.
