I really dont think the 10000k bulbs over the clam tank do the clams any justice....way to yellow in my opinion. I had been eye-balling this clam and another one for about a month now, thinking "you know...these ones look like they have potential". The other clam sold yesterday so I figured I had better take it before someone else noticed the potential. Had a little trouble finding enough floor space for it, but I got out the old shoehorn and got it in there.

The first pics was taken 2008:09:29 and the last pic was taken 2009:05:20 The frag was just starting to roll over the lip of the plug it is on, when I got it. For quite alot of that time, I wasnt testing much and dosing even less:redface: Also montis in general for some reason seem to take forever to settle in, in my tank?(perhaps due to the previous comment about dosing and testing)

 I havnt had time to hook everything up yet....been trying to formulate a plan as to where I am plugging everything in....what goes to the DC8....what goes to the HDDC4....the logistics of the whole thing hurts my brain... I have to completely shut the tank down, remove all the old power bars mount the new ones, run all the wires and cords, etc, etc. I drew a little diagram for myself and came to the realization that I have 20 cords that need to be plugged in:surprise:
Ye Old Power bar into another power bar trick. Then a label on the tank that says "In case of fire break glass". Problem solved!

Did you happen to get a hold of a serial cable? Ive been hunting around, and mainly getting laughed at. "Minidin8 to DB9" they say, "No chance, have you thought of buying a new computer". HAHA. I found out the Alberta Computer Cables could make one up for me, but if thats the case Ill just make it myself. Im hoping that setting up the Jr is easier on the PC, cause its painful with the three button menu!

I am finally starting to understand people like Catherine and Tony who are clam addicted. The color of a coral is pretty much written in stone. A green digitata is a green digitata(with some slight variance due to tank conditions). Clams on the other hand are every bit as colorful as coral, but are infinitely different in their patterning. I tried a couple clams once before and both died within a couple months. Too soon in the tanks life for clams methinks. So I got discouraged on keeping clams for a while which proved to be a good thing as the tank matured to the point that it could sustain clams. Ive had four ( 2 maximas and 2 croceas) in the tank for a few months now and all appear to be doing well and showing new growth. A couple weeks ago I added another crocea and now RC just got in some small derasas(4"). These two will bring my total up to seven. At what point do I join the clamaddicts club? Keep in mind that they were in a shipping container less then 24hrs ago. I hope they will darken up some.

yah whats with RC pulling in all this stock. Dont you guys know my tanks not ready for anything. Nor will it be :twised:. They look good Doug, again just another beautiful addition to an already stunning tank. Its near impossible to recreate the stunning scenery that we see in day to day life (not so day to day in our case (Ocean wise)) but you have done a bang up job. Tip of the hat :yo:
Side note I am pumped that I managed a bracket in a bracket statement, and better yet I found a yellow smiley face tipping its hat.

Well so far so good...apparently my regal has a more expensive pallet than clams....Australian LPS is his fave.
Not much to say about the tank these days....it seems to be on autopilot and doing rather well. All my parameters are now where they need to be and the results are really starting to show. Im really happy with the ACjr. I need to get a couple clip on fans for the tank as the variable speed ones I have been using cant be switched on by the AC.
Heres some crappy actinic pics.

I cant help the fact that I have a "blue" thumb:biggrin: I have always had incredibly good luck when it comes to fish. Thanks for the comment Brett...thats the first time anyone has said that my pics have "depth". That has always been the short coming of my little POS, PAS.
Most things are epoxied or glued in (or a combination thereof) and some are just a friction fit. Others are just sitting there....like my purple/pink millie that just took a nose dive into an acan.....wiping about half the colony out (was just thinking about fragging it too):censored::frusty:

Not a silly question at all. There is sand in the tank....the flow just keeps it pushed to the back....so the front of the tank is bare bottom and the back has an inch or two of sand. Fairy wrasses and mystery wrasses both "spin" cocoons and sleep in the rocks so sand isnt a requirement.

I just thought I would share a couple pics of my newest additions....4, 1 1/2"-2" BAs. They are having issues with my overflow atm, but other than that, they settled right in and ate(voraciously,I might add) an hour after release. They are the smallest fish in the tank atm, so they have stayed tightly schooled....which is cool. Not the best pics but you get the idea.

I had been really missing my bi-color blenny....loved how they behave and the attitude....so I broke down and took this guy home....Hes the only fish Ive ever been able to get a (somewhat) decent picture of....Im not sure exactly what kind of blenny he is....looks very similar to a lawnmower, but Ive never seen a lawnmower with red on the dorsal fin like this one.....this one also has small metallic blue spots along the lateral line....Ive been looking on line and havnt been able to figure him out.... They came to us as a starry blennies or seaweed blennies....but its clearly not either one....

I wonder if there are differences in color and patterning due to where they are collected?....Every other LMB Ive seen has been much lighter in color and has never had the red in the dorsal fin which is why I may be mis-identifying him....mine even looks way different from the one that is in one of our big coral tanks at the shop....oh well....doesnt matter really...still a very cool fish IMHO....It hasnt taken long for the little guy to think he is the king of the castle....I saw him take a bite at my much bigger regal tang(who was beside himself with anger)....funny as heck.

No....everything is good Aaron....well almost everything....I recently switched from dosing with Tailored Aquatics for Ca and Mg, to dosing with Randy's recipe....I dosed what was recommended for my tank and after a week, all of "the big three" were low.....Ca 340, Mg 950:surprise::surprise: and DKH 8.5. The recipe calls for dosing the Mg after you go through a gallon of each of the DKH and Ca, but I obviously will have to dose some in between somewhere....my tri-color nana has completely lost its purple tips....I have a green stag thats browning....amazing how it can take week/months for things to colour up and only a week to brown things out.....looks like Im going to be Mr Test-it again for a while.

That does suck, sorry man. FWIW, I empathize. Honestly, I think it's something of a rite of passage in a mixed tank. Although it could well be the change in dosing. Things literally can be that sensitive to change. It's not that one method is better or worse than another, but the bump in the road caused by changing methods has ripple effects. If it is the change in methods, just stay the course, changing back will only make it worse .. things *should* bounce back eventually.

The tank seems to be coming back slightly from its case of the hiccups....I didnt loose any more lps and the sps that browned are showing signs of getting their color back.
Between the die-off and my regal tang, it is becoming apparent that lps and my tank do not mix well.....I will likely be selling a couple more lps pieces before either my regal takes them out or I loose them for some other reason....so keep your eyes on the buy/sell forums lps lovers.... another reason I need to move a couple pieces is I am picking up two more clams from Lawrence (still shocked and bummed that you are getting out bud) tonight and have literally nowhere to put them:neutral:

Apparently its a big deal for me to be happy with the tank.....my g/f noticed the direct effect the tank seems to have on my general mood....probably why she is temporarily droppin the NNTC she imposed upon me and allowing my little add-on....
On that note I might as well make it official and post it here.....I am gonna attempt to plumb in a small 25g seahorse tank to the main system. I say attempt because after talking with a few peeps about it and doing a bit of reading its gonna be a challenge because my display routinely hits the low 80s in the summer and this is too warm for most horses. I thought about fans and possibly an ice probe. That would probably be a waste of money as I doubt that anything I do on the small tank will counter-act the 140g of 82* water in the rest of the system. So for now the plan is to keep trying to think of a way to get the g/f her ponies, but Im almost sure that I will end up taking the add-on tank in a different direction....like yasha/pistol:biggrin: or maybe dwarf fuzzy:biggrin:.....oh ya....the seahorses*focuses on the task at hand*......Ok, so with the systems current volume of 130g and considering I am what some may say slightly heavily stocked, my euro-reef 135 is having a hard time keeping up with the systems skimming needs as it is.....so an upgrade would have to happen before any increase in volume or bio-load can happen.....after carefully taking all the measurements(I thought), I started to weigh my options readily available through the store....deltec, vertex, oddysea, tunze, hydor, and BK....a couple of them both fit into the skimmer section and under the display height wise, so after an agonizing .005 of a second I decided on the BK mini 200:biggrin:....then after telling Kevin what I want, I was sitting staring at the tank one evening and it dawns on me.......28" between the bottom of the sump and the display above it, minus the 20" tall sump = 8".......footprint of the BK200 is 12"x12".......duh BK no go into sump.....so I now have a custom sump on the way that should be ready hopefully by next week....I told the g/f that it wouldnt cost that much to add a small tank to the system....she believed me:twised:

I have the display plumbed with a check valve in the return line so the only water that drains from the display in a "power out" scenario is the water that is in the return line below the check valve and the water in side the overflow box.... I swap out the check valve once a year to clean the seal on the "flapper".....gonna plumb the small tank the same way.....also the new sump is 3" wider and 6" longer , but 5" shorter according to the math I should have more than enough room for drainage...

What goes into your water on a daily basis or at water change time? Whats your trick? You have nice polyp extension and wide variety of colours, and what looks like great growth.

+1 Yeah inquiring minds want to know! My polyp extension is non-existant
Doug the tank is looking awsome. Glad to see you still had some really nice pieces left when the tank went wonky on ya.

Enzyte....the once a day pill for natural enhancement:biggrin: The commercial was true... the gals really noticed my PE:mrgreen:......
No tricks....I follow the directions on the bottles:lol: IMO the biggest things are a stable and correct "big three" (Ca, Mg and DKH).... My KZ dosing regiment(I wish I could say "I dont think it has made a difference", but I really think it has)....and the fact that the tank is a year and a half old....
I dose "Randy's recipe" for the "big three", Calcium(in the morning) and DKH (in the evening) every day, Magnesium every two to three days.
KZ dosing is as I said before...by the bottle. K-balance, B-balance, Strontium Komplex, Xtra, Coral Snow, Coral Vitalizer, Sponge Power, Amino Acid Kaliumiodid-flour, and Stylo-Pocci Glow

I like when you talk reef-dirty Mindy:twised:
No, I havnt tried either one....Thought about trying the Iron ....but there is a little voice in the back of my head that says "dont feed the algae"...maybe Im just paranoid.....finally got rid of the vast majority of all the algaes in the display....except for some halimeda....but thats easy enough to pic out when it needs it, so I leave it.....
I must give props where they are due....Gary, our tank guy rocks....knocked out my sump in a time I probably shouldnt post....and left a bill Im extremely happy with.....Thanks Gary
So here it is, in all its shiny, clean, new glory.....54"l x 15 1/2"w x 15 1/2t..... 4" longer, 3 1/2" wider and 5" shorter than the old sump....my system volume will increase by 8 gallons and I will be able to work in the sump alot better.
Same layout as the last sump...left side fuge(thinking Im gonna put a deep sand bed in this one....nut sure...waffling big time), center is the return section and the right side is skimmer

Thanks guys.....you should see it ....well ...installed...I dont know, but for some reason it looks soooo much better than the old one.
I cut and installed a small shelf for my high tech dosser (a la Snappy). I was balancing the dosing cup on the edge of the old sump, but I think this will work out better for me. You will have to use your imagination ... the shelf is upside down and backwards, as it was still drying when I snapped the pics.

And the dosing shelf in action:biggrin:
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/fishytime/IMGP3552.jpg
with the longer and wider sump, came an additional problem.... My cluster f of products and test kits and food supplements etc, etc ,etc, that were around and beside the sump would need a new home....this makes the g/f very happy:lol:

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/fishytime/IMGP3548.jpg
Ive already found that this sump is much easier to work in and around. Another plus is, the new sump has 1/2 rigid foam schtuck to the bottom that has greatly reduced the noise caused by pump vibration....Again....happy g/f:biggrin:

Thanks Lance....I wish I could upgrade....I rent, so that means the tank has to be somewhat portable....any bigger than this is a major event requiring logistics and schtuff....this tank is small enough to be moved relatively easily.
Finally got the g/f trained:lol: I came home from the shop the other night with a couple bags with some clean up crew for the pony tank....the g/f meets me at the door and says there are some groceries in her car, could I go get them? So I hand her the bags and toodle off to the car to get the groceries.....carry them in and get distracted talking to her and putting groceries away....15min go by and I realize that I didnt float the bags in the sump....I rush out to the tank and the g/f already had them floating....I love her:biggrin:.....now, if I could just train her to clean the glass:mrgreen:

Ok....enough of my crappy teaser pics heres a few that the master hisseff (JDigital)took(thanks again mang)...my PAS cameras take decent pics but they are lacking in a few areas....I get very little depth of field and I can never seem to get the color "true to life"....there's just no substituting for good equipment.(and knowing a guy that knows how to use that good equipment)

Any pics of the pyramids? (Think you might have missed my query in that other thread - but that's OK - I assume you got them though! :p)
Nope missed it Tony....ooops:redface: Actually its pyramid now:neutral:....I added the pair and they got such a rough ride from my "three amigos" (the tangs) that the weaker and more timid butterfly died....they both got ick right away as most fish in my tank do, but were eating like pigs...and Im guessing the stress of being harassed and fighting the ick was too much for the one to manage:sad: The stronger of the two is doing ok...still getting bothered at times but bolder and bolder every day....

Aww, sorry to hear that. :( Butterflies seem so delicate at first. Seems if you can nurse them past that awkward stage then maybe it's not so bad but geez, still kinda harsh the way things work out.
But that one you have left is a sure beauty! Good luck with him.

I have read that about them....they sometimes dont acclimate well, but once settled in they are usually pretty hardy....that being said this incident has made me realize that the three amigos are getting to the point that they need to move on....the regal is pushin 5", the yellow is close to 5" and the Naso was added as a means to help with some algae trouble I had (he had a back-up home before I took him home)...I have been actively trying to catch the trio....Catherine said she would take them if she could take all three at once....It wont be easy but I will see if I can swing it...I need to re-home my female fairy wrasse(the first "victim" of the hunt) first before I move anything else into the 25g, so the hunt for the tangs has been put on hold....I will probably end up replacing the blue and the yellow with much smaller versions.
