Well......V2 is almost clam-less.......I lost another three in the last two weeks....... somewhat of a chain reaction type thing like Tony described after an urchin had picked up my little blue guy and carried him around for an undetermined amount of time.....that clam died the day after I rescued him from his roller coaster ride and then I lost two in the next few days...... I sold one to Tai and that leaves me with one:neutral:.....Im not positive but I believe in my own mind that the hippo clam was bad luck if nothing else and had to go....all my troubles seemed to start happening shortly after I added this clam(I told Tai this before I sold him the clam)I cant say for sure whether or not the hippo had anything to do with my run of bad clam luck but......
anyway.....on to lighter topics.....some more reef porn.......

little bit of news......a couple of dwarf angels from a canreefer ended up at the shop....a potters and a flameback......I have always wanted a potters and being that this one was from someone's tank made him very attractive......I pmed the guy to see why it was the fish needed a new home, thinking perhaps it was doing some coral sampling.....he got back to me saying that the angels just didnt fit in with the stocking plans for the new tank.....this got me humming and hawing...........problem is I already have a DW coral beauty and the potters is similar in color and size.....I was sure that my CB would jump in the new angel, the question was how bad would the initiation be...I debated for over a week and when I went back to the shop last w/e they were both still there.....I briefly had the stupid idea to take both the potters and the flameback to disperse the aggression that was sure to happen......but I was too chicken to try that......in the end I decided to take the flameback instead:mrgreen:.......he got jumped in hard.....and I mean hard, by my CB and my powder blue.....so hard that I had to divide my tank in two with nets to give the poor little guy a couple hours to at least catch his breath from being moved.....I left the nets in until the lights went out and went to work the next day fully expecting to come home to either a thoroughly beat up fish, a floating fish, or a CCC(crispy carpet critter) ......I got home to a flameback out and about, swimming around like he had been in the tank for monthes, with just a couple marks (nothing major) and a CB with a few marks:surprise:.....I couldnt believe that the little flameback(half the CBs size) took a piece out of the CB......full of pi$$ and vinegar the little guy is, which is probably a good thing all things considered......he's been in the tank for a week now and while there is still some tension between the two angels I think its safe to say that the two should be able to tolerate each others existence.....at least for the time being.....

That's great Doug! I like to hear success stories; so many times it doesn't work out with the new additions.
I am usually so cautious about what I add and I tend to hum and haw forever about it because I know that if a fish is small, my coral beauty or mystery wrasse will "jump in" and if the fish is large the tangs will "jump in".....it kinda makes adding a new fish a roll of the dice.....but I guess that holds true for every tank....you really never know how the addition will effect the dynamics of the tank.....
I had another success story........the same w/e that I brought home the flameback, I decided to bring home Winky the one eyed shrimp goby....this fish had been at the shop for over a year nobody wanted him because of his disability.....with the upcoming shop move I thought I would bring him home......problem is I already have a shrimp goby in the tank.....the one I have is way over at the very end of the tank so I gambled, thinking that Winky would have the entire rest of the tank to find a home......so home he came and when it came time to release him I took him in my hand and placed him at the opposite end of the tank......a couple days past without seeing him, then one evening at feeding time I see him come out of my original goby's hole.....I thought "Uh-Oh"......"wheres my other goby?....Did he get evicted?" ......another couple days pass, feeding time again and what do I see?.....both shrimp gobies come out of the same hole:surprise:......I cant believe my dumb luck.....I thought for sure that there would be goby wars if the two of them met up, but instead, they paired up........Winky has been in the tank for a couple weeks now and seems to be doing well....I have noticed that he does seem to have some trouble tracking food as it blasts by in my super-flow tank.....he sometimes misses and has to wait for another piece of food to fly by....his disability seems to have made him a lot bolder than most gobies, he will actually travel quite far to chase down food, out of necessity no doubt.....really stoked that my gobies paired up tho:biggrin:
heres a couple crappy pics through dirty glass ( the first time Ive seem the two of them out together since I added Winky)....Winky is the larger or the two and showing off his better side in these pics....

What's the secret to those? Everything in my tank is doing well except the lone chalice I have. It's just sitting on the sandbed but one edge is slowly receding and it's starting to be a valonia farm around 2 of the sides where it was cut.

Doug your tank is full of colors man your corals are popping, I dont know how you are doing it , your not peeing in your tank are ya
To be honest with you Mike, I dont know how Im doing it:noidea:.......Im quite surprised that some of my stuff looks as good as it does.....Ive been lazy with my feeding(feeding dry instead of frozen), Ive been lazy with my water changes (1 per month lately:redface:)..and Ive been lazy with my dosing....the tank is coming up on a year old(since the move) and I still havnt even tested the tank for Ca, Mg or DKH.....all this laziness was really starting to show.....Im getting crazy amounts of algae in the small tank and cyano and diatoms in both tanks.........I finally decided to start putting some effort into the tank in the last couple weeks and have changed all my lazy habits....been dosing some of my KZ product on a semi-regular basis, 15g water changes every 5 days or so and I MAY dust off the profilux doser today and get it set back up and running.....we'll see if actually putting some effort into the tank helps:lol:.....

small equipment update.....I'm "guinea pigging" a new line of clamp on fans that RC started carrying..... made by aqua world......it a pretty slick little unit.....two computer style fans mounted in a decent looking housing....*said in a fake TV-mmercial announcer type voice*"and its adjustable"....its a little nosier than my ghetto style Wally-mart clip on fan that I was running(zip tied up so it cant fall in the sump!!), but it definitely puts out more air......It doesn't cool the tank better than the old fan, but it sure as heck looks better.....and it was cheap cheap.......Ive got it clipped on to one of the baffles in my sump ATM......

well......V2 is a year old:biggrin:......the tank(or the big tank I should say) seems to be responding well to my renewed interest in maintaining it:redface:.....I still have crazy amounts of algae in the small tank that I am trying to prune out.....still getting some diatoms in a few spots....Ive resorted to moving rocks that I can over into the big tank for a week or so to have the tangs and angels and blenny go to work on it.....but that really just a band aid solution......big water change and media swap this evening and I bump up the amount of rowa this time.......we'll see if that makes any kind of difference or not....

He's been talking about wanting a bigger tank for awhile but kept changing his mind on what he wanted and then wasn't sure if he would ever follow through with it. I kept pushing him to make up his mind on what he wanted (tank size wise) and I figured I'd help push him to follow through with it by getting it done for him for his birthday

dont get married Doug - the sweet gifts are few and far between once you tie the knot. I got a 42" flatscreen as a gift from the GF (now wife) way back when. Now that we are married I pretty much get clothes for every gift or gift cards for home depot so i can fix or renovate something to her liking...

now thats a good girlfriend. Every girl i know asks why I spend that much on my tank, I than point and there purse and ask "why did you spend that much on a portable garbage bag."
I know she is:biggrin:

dont get married Doug - the sweet gifts are few and far between once you tie the knot. I got a 42" flatscreen as a gift from the GF (now wife) way back when. Now that we are married I pretty much get clothes for every gift or gift cards for home depot so i can fix or renovate something to her liking...
I dunno about that, My wife bought me my skimmer for a gift, once I figure out what kind of flow I want she's going to buy me that for a B-Day gift. Last year she was going to buy me a brand new truck, but I put a stop to that one once I caught wind of it..
Now that we have twins though... I'm not sure how long that trend will last.
Remember Doug, Twins run in Lauries family.....
Well it's pretty much the nicest gift I've ever recieved!
Not to sure about marriage yet..... We should probably live together first
I like twins........ Oh! You were talking about kids weren't you?

someone else asked me this a few pages ago.......it probably changed a little but should be fairly accurate......
I'll do better than ballpark it
38 different sps
3 different favias
10 different acans
5 different micromussas
2 different blastomussas
3 different chalices
brain
2 scolys
37 different zoas
2 different rhodactis mushrooms
2 different yuma rics
dendros
duncans
maze coral
and an unidentified lps sorta like an acan but not
:drinking:I dont have a problem:mrgreen:

Hahaha, that's an actinic shot! It still has green in the middle near the base, but all the branches are purple. I will be in Ontario from the 3rd to the 8th so I may be slow to reply or maybe not reply until I'm back. If you want it, I will have to snip it on the 9th, and bring it to you unmounted on the 10th. :)

I thought I would post a short vid of my new additions......I know peoples track records with them......and Laurie thinks Im stupid for trying...........but Ive always wanted to do a group of fish........so, I added 14 chromis.......its only been a day, buts I can say that its really neat seeing the initial behavior.......the chromies were of course stressed when first introduced so they stayed in a tight ball formation for the better part of the evening..very cool to watch.......it was kinda weird, non of my usual bullies paid them any attention......most of my resident fish were curious but not at all aggressive....... they probably thought they were being invaded by little blue/green aliens:mrgreen:....... only one fish seemed really irritated by the new arrivals......my royal gramma.....usually one of the most passive fish I have, but man was he P oed.......it actually ended up being quite the show.....the gramma stayed "puffed up" and agitated for a couple hours......strutting and chasing and flaring and posing.........it was cool.......I wish he would do that more often:mrgreen:......anyway, its only been a day and the chromis are already starting to break into smaller groups at times.....I wanted to take and post the vid of them while I,..... A) still have 14 of them......and B) while they were still acting as a group, not individuals...... its just a short vid and it kinda looks like the Blair witch project because I took the vid with my I-phone.....

well Ive started the stock piling process for the upgrade( let the wallet draining begin)......I have about 40 lbs of marco rock cooking/seeding in a rubbermaid with about 30lbs of both new and old LR from my sump...That coupled with the 150 lbs or so of rock in the display should be a good start....Ive picked up three buckets of H2Ocean and a couple boxes of IO...... will likely start the tank with IO and then do water changes with the H2Ocean.....I also picked up 120 lbs of new sand.......I need to get the stand built (going with a metal stand).....need to design a sump.......need to decide on lighting......need to figure out what Im gonna do for a skimmer.....the skimmer I would want is a BK 300int, but at $2400, thats something that is way out of my league......I thought about the big vertex cone too, but thats not really all that much cheaper in the grand scheme of things.......Im actually leaning towards keeping my BK mini 180 and adding another skimmer of a similar rating......the new sump should have plenty of room for two skimmers.......not sure tho.....one thing I am sure of is, Im going with an external pump......either a snapper gold, or a super dart gold.....if I do the snapper then I will run reactors off of their own pumps and the small tank(If I decide to plumb that in again) will have its own return.....if I go with the dart, then I will do a manifold to run the reactors and the small tank off of the dart....both my brain and wallet hurt just thinking about it all:mrgreen:.....

not too much to update on this tank these days.....Ive been trying to adhere to a "no new live stock" rule for the tank.....the decision has been made with regards to who is going to move (Laurie or I)......looks like Im moving to Edmonton to be with my Girly......so no sense in adding any more live stock to this tank.......the plan is for me to attempt to get the big tank going in Edmonton ASAP and then slowly move some of my reef up there each time I visit.....there is no way I want to move the entire contents of my two tanks at once, after what happened last time I moved......the process has already started.....Ive moved 4 acan colonies, my open brain, green favia, duncans, florida rics and my cherry sundae chalice into Lauries reef......this has me a little nervous.....Laurie has a couple fish that may or may not sample things.....she has a foxface, so that rules out my zoas....she says it doesnt eat them, but Im not willing to risk it.....so my zoas will have to go in her 80g ......I have started adding to my zoa collection In Lauries tank....Ive recently scored some purple puddles, nuclear greens, candy apples, jeckles and one that I dont know the name of......I will have to try and get some pics next time Im in E-town (unless Laurie takes some pics with her fancy dancy new camera)......she also has a flame angel that nips at her sps, so my sps will most like go to Red Coral E-town (thanks for the offer Steve)...... so, my tank is looking a little bare.....relatively speaking I guess.....so there will be a bit less shiny stuff for me to take pics of......less reef porn for the masses....
I know I said I was trying to adhere to my livestock rule but:redface:.......this was really a decision that I waffled back and forth on for a while.....I broke two rules with this addition.......I also had a very very very strict NO NEM rule for this tank.......so I guess Im officially on the Maxi-mini nem bandwagon....(even tho nems is evil).....thats right folks, the 25g tank is now a "maxi pad"......it took about two minutes for the nem to take hold of the rock and another five minutes for three of my sexy shrimp to find it and start hosting in it....

after what seems like forever the pieces of the puzzle are finally coming together......I went up to E-town this past w/e to see my Girly and help her with cube....and I got an early X-mas surprise.....Lauries had the stand for my tank done for me.....she knew I had been talking with Greg(Grizz) about doing the stand and contacted him and had him do the stand for me for X-mas.... heres a couple pics....one that Greg took at his shop after completion and a couple that Laurie took for me of it in its spot in her basement.....apparently Laurie and Greg had a bit of a time getting it into her house....there is a couple minor scuffs in the stand from the screen door, nothing a can of Krylon wont fix...... it is big, heavy and very well built......thanks Grizz....and thanks baby for the early prezzie.....so here she is in all her glory...all 84x30x30 of her....

I cant wait either!!!!...this has been in the works since my birthday in July.....Im chomping at the bit for it to move faster, but my disposable income is a limiting factor:neutral:..especially when Girly keeps needing stuff:wink:...at least now with the stand, I have something solid to show off.....and believe me the stand is SOLID......
Nice dims Doug. You're gonna love those 30".
I know Im gonna love the width......you are so limited to what you can do aquascaping wise in a narrower tank.......Im hoping to have enough time and patience to do something really dramatic and blow people away with the scape........thats the hope anyway:mrgreen:......both versions of the 110 have had two overhangs that have a 6-8' projection.....Ive had plenty compliments on them, but with a deeper tank I know I could do a massive overhang......one thing I have always wanted to achieve and never have, is an archway that didnt look fake.....every time Ive tried the arch always looked really cheesy and I ended up scrapping it.....so maybe this time, being that I will hopefully have the time to take my time, I will try again

and now a little story about reef irony.......we all know how difficult of a coral goniopora seems to be.....most people cant seem to keep them alive......myself included......Ive tried twice and killed both colonies rather quickly........a while back there was a stn-ing colony of some sps at the shop that I noticed had a small cluster of colonial tunicates on the bottom of the base, so I took the colony home because I have always thought tunicates were cool.......well the tunicates didnt do so well and the chunk of rock has been moved here and there and flipped and twisted trying to get these tunicates happy .....which never did happen, they ended up dieing.....since then, the rock has just been kinda in there, taking up space, so I thought I would turf it to the sump.......but wait....whats that?......a little wee quarter sized hitchhiker goniopora!!!........figures that the two I paid for died and the one I didnt even know I had is doing well:mmph:

I can't seem to capture the blue very well in my digi. It's high up and no matter what I do the light washes the blue right out. If I seriously under-expose the shot I can see the blue but then it's so dim it looks like I'm running LEDs so I dunno.

thanks mang.....I love that scoly.....even though having it makes me nervous......most moulah Ive ever spent on a coral......Im always worried that something is gonna fall on it or eat it or something......
you werent sposed to notice my hairy pits:redface:.........the scoly is in the small tank that has no angels or tangs......and because of this, the algae runs rampant.....I literally prune out a couple handfuls every time I do a w/c.....once I move the contents (corals, fish and critters) up to E-town, Im going to rotate one rock at a time into the big tank and have the tangs and angels shave it down.......hopefully

ya ya......angels are big algae eaters......they constantly pick......unfortunately, at more than algae sometimes:neutral:....
it does kinda look like hair algae, but it is some kind of calerpra, similar to "feather"........my yellow tang and chevron pick at it ....there is some growing in the big tank, in the eggcrate overflow strainer, where it is hard for the tangs to reach......i see them up there from time to time trying to get to it......
