But your only 999.... I am 1000!

Let me rephrase that... 999th reply, as Post 1 is not a "reply" like the rest. I am the 1000st reply. :D

And in Celebration, I wanted to post this for anyone needing a desktop wallpaper. Hope you don't mind Doug. ;)

*sigh*........ever have one of those weeks????......I found one of my sexy shrimp eating an acan:neutral:.........it didnt do much damage when I noticed so I moved the acan over to the big tank........kinda out of the frying pan and into the fire......the acans are in the small tank to begin with because my regal tang has a taste for them.....the next day the sexy was on another acan frag happily munching away:mad:......so I moved that one over to the big tank too....

I placed them somewhat close to a small crocea (the one surrounded in yellow polyps).....I guess the change in flow caused the clam to wonder directly up and on to the second acan frag.....the next morning the clam was dead:sad:.......I dont quite understand why.......

the next day I lost my pyramid butterfly........

next day the acan frag that the clam tap danced on, mostly melted......

next day I find my lineatus wrasse on the floor.............

I love my tank:crazy::boom:

I bumped up the flow again......I decided to replace a Koralia 2 I had hidden behind the rockwork with a Tunze 6045.....the K2 is rated at 600gph and the Tunze is rated at 1200gph....I have the Tunze pointed from the back of the tank through an opening in the rock towards the front of the tank....the increase in flow has severely irritated some hairy mushrooms that are in the vicinity:biggrin:

I had a near miss the other day.....I came home from work and looked at the tank for a couple minutes and hit the computer as usual......I sat at the puter for a few and went to the kitchen to get a bevvie....I came back in the living room to find my flame angel on the floor.......my flame angel jumped????? WTF!....Ive never heard of an angel jumping before......anyway, I scooped him up and back in the tank he went......I didnt see him for about an hour and then there he was.....chasing my neon dottyback like nothing had even happened....Whew! I briefly thought about putting him in the sump to give to a friend that probably misses her flame.....but this was the third fish I bought and has been with me for over two years.....

Amazing how quickly you become attached huh?
The incident has got me thinking hard about the dynamics in the tank....I need to re-home the big boys....the angel has always thought he was the boss of the tank.....and Ive recently seen him challenging my naso.......perhaps that's what happened...the naso is a bit of a turd hisself...maybe he showed the angel who's boss....

I would honestly love to go bigger....my dream tank would be 24"Tx36"Dx96"L (360g)......but alas, I rent:neutral:......so this tank is still somewhat manageable to move.....

So I found what I am going with. 48''LX30''Wx20D thats the size that will fit in my office so pretty sure thats what it will be. Now need to find the proper lights for it. do you think the 8 bulb new tek light would work for this?

If the tank is 30" front to back then I personally would put two 6 bulb units over it:wink:

Amazing how quickly you become attached huh?
The incident has got me thinking hard about the dynamics in the tank....I need to re-home the big boys....the angel has always though he was the boss of the tank.....and Ive recently seen him challenging my naso.......perhaps that's what happened...the naso is a bit of a turd hisself...maybe he showed the angel who's boss....

Ya...I feel lost without my Flame! Like something is missing...

I dont have enough water in my house and my fondness for clams has turned out to be a full blown addiction!...............so......................I m gonna be adding another tank to the system after I move. The tank is 24x24x12 (Josh's old cube) and will be lit by a single 250w MH(galaxy ballast, lumenmax elite reflector) or if the budget allows I may order in the 24" 8 bulb ATI, we'll see what happens......I will need to upgrade the return for the system.....Im currently running two in sump return pumps(one for the 110 and one for the "anti-pony" tank).....so Im thinking about drilling the sump and putting a "dart gold" with a manifold on the system....that would free up quite a bit of space in the sump and reduce heat transfer considerably......its all still a couple months away so plans may change:mrgreen:

couple things to report......I stopped dosing KZ Eisen conentrate!........the add-on tank is such a mess with algae that Im gonna see if starving the tank of iron helps knock it back a little......

I mentioned a few days ago that I had a colony of sps that a green BTA was starting to get within reach of......lesson learned:neutral: dont be lazy like me.....I thought that just the part of the base of the colony that the nem was touching, would be affected......I was wrong:onfire:......overnight

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/fishytime/IMG_0017-4.jpg

the RTN of that colony also took out a large portion of a green monti cap that was touching the colony on the back side.....a two-fer......so boys and girls......move it or loose it!

I started preparing to get things organized for the move.......I borrowed the label maker from work and got started on printing off everything to label my electrical lay-out so I wont sit there scratching my head about where to plug everything back in, in the "tank move scramble"......Ive come to a conclusion, we reefers got a lot o crap we need to plug in!.......

How did you get all your rock to sit like that?
the structures on each end were done with a pvc sub-frame, the rock is attached with "zipties" and "firmed" up with epoxy......the center structure is free standing.....

I guess, Im really fortunate to be sitting at home ATM.......normally I would be up at 6:00 am to go to work......I wouldnt even have noticed.....only noticed as I was sitting at the computer having my "second cup", perving canreef, at about 8:00 that the bottom of the back panel of the stand was wet:surprise:

HEHE, the floor will be fine. At least the tank didn't crack or something bad like that.

not sure.....this is the second time its been wet!.......a cracked tank would have forced me to either upgrade.....or quit:neutral:

all dry today so it looks like I got everything fixed......gonna be a little stressful not knowing if there is any damage there, until I pretty much hand the landlord the keys:neutral:......

Im wondering now if I may have an issue inside the tank......I had two frags rtn on me the same night of the leak...... got me wondering if the colony rtn from last week might be related to this and not the nems fault?....another change I made besides stopping the iron dosing was, I've been doubling up on my "coral snow" dosage, because of the mess in the add-on tank(theres some cyano as well as the macro)....so not sure if this is what caused the stress.........

params before my water change on Monday were.

DKH 10 (perfect)
CA 390 (adjusted the profilux to now dose 30ml, 24 times a day)
MG 1350 (not too bad, presently dose 5/8 cup every two weeksish, will bump up to 3/4 cup or possibly 3/8 cup every week)

I didnt test the nitrates.....will do that after the morning dosing has a chance to run through the system a bit....

only fish I can get a good shot of.....

Make a crossbow out of popsicle sticks (or similar) and elastics and shoot toothpicks at him. If you have shrimp, usually an injury is enough to turn them into a frenzy and they'll eat their clawed brethren alive (you say 'nems are evil.. I say anything with claws is evil .. some are just pretty enough to keep around).

Make sure your aim is good though. I wouldn't trust myself to do this idea at all. "Whoops... Gosh I really liked that clam/fish/insert-something-other-than-undesired-crab here" :( )

Tank's getting a little full Doug, time to upgrade. Simon has that beautiful 165gal for sale. You could go close loop, and loose a few of the powerheads.

Do it Doug!

I already measured my tiny as heck living room and it was a no-go haha.

Geez........you guys are killing me........you all know I would love to upgrade, but..........no $ means it will have to wait.....the other reason it will have to wait is.............I need to make sure the new place has 10' of wall space before I can do what I wanna do:wink:.....

So I heard a few things in this thread which caught my attention;

1) Clam Tank
2) My name
3) Someone else has the Clam Bug
4) New to me giant fishies!
5) Potential frag party at Doug's!

That all being said...I wish I could load up your photos quicker on my phone...they are very pretty on my phone screen.

well I sign the lease and pick up the keys for the new place tomorrow.....its kinda a kwirky and dated place but it was a) big enough(including half the dbl car garage for storage) b) cheaper than where I am now c) its only a ten minute move for the tank. and d) perhaps the most important thing is I can start moving in now at no extra charge.....this is a huge relief....now I dont have to try and get people to help me move in the middle of the week....I can do the move over 10 days.....this is cool....so ya .....the big move days are the 26 and 27....the 27 being the tank move.....I've been slowly selling off some of the more sensitive critters(starfish, featherdusters etc.)......my clams are going to spend a couple months with Sean(xtreme) and some of my "cant loose" sps is going to visit Kien.......Thanks again a ton for this guys!......there will be big time changes in the fish list......both my blue regal and yellow tang are going to Catherine, my naso may(we're workin on it) be going to Scott(Argentiner), one last remaining anthia is going to Kien, talbots damsel is going to Mikey(ElGuappo) and my mystery wrasse is going to E-town to live with Laurie(fishoholic)....all this should reduce the strain that the system is sure to go through......still freaked out about it though:neutral:

thanks guys for all the responses, kind words and offers for help.....those of you who know me, know that this tank was a part of me and sitting there watching it all die was devastating to say the least....

first off I wanna thank Mikey(El Guappo) big time for helping me with the move(It wasnt easy)......he helped me for 10 hours:surprise:........I didnt think the move went all that bad.......it took 13 hours to take down the entire system, which sounds like a lot but the system is two separate tanks sharing the same sump.......it was a 24 degree day(not to cool, not too hot) so I put all the coolers/bins out on the front lawn with probably 70% of the containers having a powerhead in them....all the containers with either fish or corals had a powerhead.........the small tank had a 2-3" inch sandbed so I ditched that.....the big tank only had an inch in it so I figured it would be ok to move it.....that was my critical error in judgment(I think)......anyways.....it was 10:00ish when we finally got the tanks to the point where Mikey could go home.....I spent the next couple hours putting all the rock, coral and fish back into their respective tanks with just the basics running(heat and water movement)....the plumbing would have to wait...... the sump ran with a small powerhead with a hose pumping water from the skimmer section to the fuge which kept water moving through the whole sump....I got up later that morning to go to work and my male clown was swimming in that dumb arse clown way right at the front of the tank......I thought things were ok and left for work......I get a call about noon from the new landlord(who needed to get in to my place that day) that house stinks, and he's concerned if the tank smells like that all the time.....I just figured that he was smelling some of the frags that got missed in some of the bins(I noticed a slight smell when I woke up too) and reassured him that the tank doesnt smell......I got home from work and the stench nearly knocked me over......I still just thought it was the bins stinking things up so I quickly gathered them all up, took them outside an rinsed them with the hose......I went back in and as I got close to the tank I could tell that it was the tank that wreaked .....the water was like milk.....I couldnt see two inches into the tank....I could however see two dead fish right at the front of the tank and I knew the worst had happened......I sat there for literally an hour not doing a thing.....just sortta in shock.....thats when I posted the tank had crashed...at that point I seriously was considering shutting the tank down.....I got a couple quick calls with offers(thanks again guys) for 10- 20g of water and another call from a close friend who talked me through things and convinced me to try and save what I could.....I put a call out to Kevin(you know how much I appreciate your help) at the shop and he said he could have 80g(I had 20 ready as well) of water ready for me and he would help me with the water change.....I gathered up my bins and ran up to the shop(it was 8:30pm).....we pumped water from the back of the shop, out the front door and into the bins in the back of my truck.....drove the water back to my place and Kevin pumped the water from the curb, through a window and into the tank(transfusion style) while I drained water out and flushed it.....Kevin then offered to stay and help me get the tank plumbed....it was midnight when he left and I stayed up to get the skimmer up and running, carbon going through a reactor and do an emergency dose of prime......the massive water change had cleared the water some but by morning the tank was still cloudy and stinking......I put the lights on and the scene was apocalyptic.....I could see dozens of dead snails, a couple more dead fish and all my corals were dead(except for some mushrooms a couple zoanthids and a couple lps)..... the attitude then shifted from saving the tank to just starting over again.....I had to work again that day, so when I got home I started the gruesome task of sifting blindly through murky water feeling for every rock(breaking/ cutting/ hacking off dead or dieing coral), fish and snail......the bodies filled a large coleman extreme cooler 5" deep

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/fishytime/IMGP4426.jpg
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/fishytime/IMGP4427.jpg

so the tank is pretty much a complete right off.....one blasto and a handful of hermits is all that survived.....heres couple shots of what my skimmer looked like for a few days(its almost completely choked of air)

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/fishytime/IMGP4428.jpg
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o19/fishytime/IMGP4430.jpg

I couldnt bring myself to do anything else with the tank.....it sat just with the rock randomly piled from my body search for a few days until Laurie came down for a visit(she was spossed to get a piece of my wrasse...mystery wrasse that is).....I owe a special thanks to her for kicking me in the butt to do something about the state the tank was in.....she sat on the floor for an hour scraping dead stinky zoas off of some of my bigger pieces of rock(while I fished them out) and helped me aquascape the tank(and her skills are up to par:wink:).......so that brings the thread up to date.......the tank is re-scaped and cycling.......and Im officially starting over.......there is still a bunch that I need to do with the tank, like put the rest of the powerheads back in the tank, set up the controller/ato/doser......gonna try and get that done tomorrow(er, I mean later today), clean the glass and get some pics of the new scape up

This happened to me when the auto top off failed flooding my tank,it is hard thing to swallow. I rebuilt with help from Bob, John and Kevin. I fixed all the flaws in the tank i never liked and we think it looks way better. It is no where in the same boat as mine were still mostly frags. The bit that gets me is that if this can happen to an experienced reefer like Doug, then what's in store for a twit like me ?

Anyone else feel queasy ?

I guess the lesson to learn from this is to try to be around after any kind of significant change is made to your system. I plumbed a chiller last night and stayed up for hours checking for leaks and making sure it wasn't going to over-cool the tank. I eventually went to bed and got up early to re-check everything.

My wife thinks I'm paranoid but after hearing about Doug's misfortune, I feel a little better. Hopefully Doug, you feel a little better by now too !

Im really not 100% positive what caused the crash......could have been the sand......could have been something else, there was a lot of life under a lot of stress......

Heres what V2 looks like......I reused the PVC substructure I had for the overhangs but changed the layout of them in the tank.....

Wow... quite the difference from that last time I saw the tank...

That new scape looks pretty slick though... a bit more open, then again that's how the first one started and you just gradually filled it with more rock to accommodate more SPS..

Just think man.. This time next year you will be WELL on your way back to glory, and you will have fun getting there.

We should grab a beer and catch up!

Thanks Leah.

Doug I enjoyed my visit with you, especially giving your "butt" a kick  I'm glad we got the tank aquascaped, however it's kind of you to say my skills (at least when it come to aquascaping ) are up to par when I know I suck at it! Good thing you have mad aquascaping skills, I really like how the rock's set up, now get on those pic.'s so everyone else can see

I had a great time too Laurie.....dont sell yourself short.....I only tweaked the top part of your side of the scape......I liked your bottom enough to use it:wink:

He he! Back to being X-rated and has nothing to do with me this time.

ya whats up with that Leah?....you dont find me worthy anymore:wink::razz:

more scape pics....

New scape looks bangin' man. Considering where you work that tank will be splashed with colour in NO time. V2 is ALIVE!!

Well at least you used my "bottom" well

You should take a full tank shot so everyone can get the full effect of how cool the new scape is.

It seems like every hobby I have has it's x-rated side of things. I play foosball and people are always talking about the fuzzy balls, stiff/straight rods, lubing the rods and ball handling skills. I come on to Doug's thread to see an update and now you've put the image of Laurie handling Doug's rock into my mind.....

It was only 3 hrs and it was worth it

Joking aside I am glad I went and helped out. He was pretty sad about everything and he needed a push to get back on track and not shut it all down. I'm glad I was there to help him out and get the tank going again.

I am so sorry to hear about your tank crash. My heart goes out to you Doug. If it makes you feel any better we went through one semi-recently that involved all our SPS dying in a matter of days-and we are moving yet again in September-so I really empathize with how you feel.

Keep chugging along. You have every reason to: you know you are good at it, this was a freak incident and they happen to us all, RC has great pricing (esp. for employees), you have so many people who care about you and support you in keeping at it. I mean look at this thread! It is over a 100 pages long. That's not just because of the pretty pictures.:grouphug:

If you are bored waiting for the coralline to come back you could always skin that stand
