Default Mushroom removal

Hi I know that Mushroom Corals are very difficult to remove and kill off. Everything I have read talks about dealing with Mushrooms on live rock.

I was given a Candy Cane coral (not sure which kind yet) and it also came with a couple brown mushrooms. The candy cane has 4 heads and is still fairly small. The mushrooms are on the stony part but are starting to extend over to the polyp of the Candy Cane. When the Mushroom is fully extended I notice that the Candy Cane doesn't open up.

I am planning on cutting the Mushroom off but I know that this is more of a band-aid rather than a fix to the problem. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks
Chris

I have always just peeled them off at the base with my fingernail with no issue. Some tricky spots may need to be worked on little by little but just scrape away.
