Default Sump questions

I'm looking at getting a sump for my next tank and the LFS I go to has a sump that has a sheet of black plexi in it that sections off a part for the refugium. Is there any compelling reason to get the refugium and sump in one box or is it better for them to be seperate? Or is there anything stopping me from dumping a ball of macro into a regular sump without the division?

We feel it is always better to seperate the refugium from the sump. If the refugium is seperate, you can control individual flow rates to each vessel. If you experience any problem with your refugium you should be able to isolate it from the rest of your system easily. The only benefit to combining the two would be space limitations, otherwise we feel keeping them seperate is to your advantage.

Cool Refugium

Door has been cut to show refugium when closed...intake flows into refugium and out towards back into sump.
