Default Dentrifier -quesion

Hi
I read the diy on denitrifiers apparatus and was wondering this.
If yo have a fluval 105 filter why could you not remove all 'filter' media, add bio balls and run that as denitrifier? It might take a while longer to 'cycle' in but I can't see why it wouldn't work. ( I am new to Saltwater by the way)

You would need to ensure that this was a low-oxygen environment somehow. Just changing the media won't do it.

Agreed. The Bioballs will actually create Nitrates. Not remove them.

I packed my xp1 with live rock rubble and smaller pieces and am running it on a 30 gallon with a prizm pro hob skimmer with next to no nitrate.

The coil Denitrator works, because it goes through so slowly, that the oxygen is depleted before the water even fills the canister,

then the output of it @ 2 drops / sec on average, is roughly 60 Gallons . day
