Default experienced mac users I need help

I bought a imac 6,1 on kijiji that I was going to use for internet and movies for the kids. But I'm having troubles with graphic glitching and locking. The last owner upgraded to snow leopard osx and left discs from his 15" laptop (osx 10.5.5) in the box. Soooo I didn't get the original os and from what I've researched so far snow leopard is not compatible with my iMac. I think it's a software problems but I'm new to Apple.
I've owned a iMac 9,1 for a couple of years and have never had a problem but I'm stumped with this computer. I feel ripped off at the moment so if you can help I will give you a frag from my tank.

the laptop disk isnt going to work on the imac.

you'll need to find an OSX disk thats for imac. probably before snow leopard

its probably because imac 6,1 isnt intel so the drivers are all messed up

iMac 6.1 is a Core2Duo INTEL chip, the problem could be incorrectly seated ram module, after checking I think preforming a clean install of current OS would be best.

Here is the specs for 6.1 model.
http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl...nch-specs.html

I think you should remove the ram from the computer, make sure both chips are from the same manufacturer, the computer will handle OS X 10.7x so this means you can install Lion, right down to Tiger 10.4.

If you have a current mac with Lion installed, you can download this tool from Apple
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433?v...S&locale=en_US

Use it on your iMac 9.1, the tool will read the recovery partition, and then create a recovery on a USB drive; you can then use this USB drive to install Lion on the 6.1 iMac, do a completely fresh install, not an upgrade.

If you need help learning how to do a fresh install send me a PM I will help you with detailed instructions mate

edit--

Here is a link that will guide you though a clean install

It's a retail copy of Snow Leopard, or laptop recovery discs ?

If you are trying to use model specific recovery DVD's it will not work out properly mate, you will need to use a retail DVD that looks like this

The grey topped discs are no good for different models mate.

That is the copy of Snow Leopard it came with (v10.6.3), My 9,1 came with 10.6 if that means anything.

Here is the ram I pulled out:
Hynix 1GB 2Rx8 PC2-5300S-555-12
Kingston KTA - MB800/1G

The Kingston is Apple certified, now all that means is it's running the correct times on the memory module.... I would remove the Hynix, run the machine to see is this solves the problem; run it for a few hours.

Now with the install DVD, that is great news you have the right copy.

**Before removing the Ram, you should follow this guide to run the Apple Hardware Test
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 ***

Basically you have to hold down the "D" key while you press the power button, this will take you to the special diagnostic mode that will check the Ram, CPU, GPU and bus controllers.

I would run the hardware test first, see if you get some errors, if not that I would remove the Hynix ram and run the computer to see if that solves the problem.

I pulled the ram to find out what they were and now I can't get them to seat properly, I pushed them in and the little arms won't go back in.

edit I got them in. phew I didn't want to force anything.
