On a brighter note

"On Tuesday, the Legislative Yuan approved a landmark amendment to Taiwan's Animal Protection Act, banning the selling, purchasing, consumption or possession of dog or cat meat with offenders facing fines of between NT$50,000 (US$1600) to NT$250,000 (US$8100) and having photos of themselves publicized, according to Focus Taiwan News."

"The amendments also stiffen punishment for those who intentionally harm animals to a maximum two years' imprisonment and fines of NT$200,000 to NT$2 million.

Repeat offenders can be jailed for one to five years and fined NT$500,000 to NT$5 million."

They are the first country in Asia to do so. Thanks Taiwan 🇹🇼

Update

Not sure if this is a 100% success story YET but it appears as though there will be a ban in place by the time this years Yulin dog meat festival begins on the summer solstice. The ban is only temporary but likely halt the festival from taking place this year and due to global pressure will hopefully never happen again. Thanks to any and all Canreef members who took the time to sign online petitions, thanks to Mr. Mo Gong Ming, Yulin’s new party secretary, and thanks again to Amber for the donation!

This is like Foie Gras....putting a huge amount of stress on an animal just to make it more tasty.

If this is a legitimate food source, it needs to be regulated.

As much as it disgusts me personally, I can't fault people who like to (by necessity or preference) eat animals that aren't typical for Western based cultures.

We raise and slaughter a significant number of animals and not every one is raised and killed in a humane way.

I would feel safe in assuming that slaughter houses in China, whether you are a pig, chicken, lamb, goat or cow are not ideal places to be.

Cats and Dogs are abundant and breed easily. I can understand how they can become a food source.

But my god...

This festival is human hubris at it's worst.

I sure hope that this is the beginning of the end for it.

The type of animal doesn't bother me either - it's the torture that bothers me. Be it in China or Canada.
