If you can think how I could protect it from my closed loop intake, I would love to borrow him.

My intake is a 24 inch long piece of 1.5" PVC, with slits cut into it with a table saw. The suction is very low on each slit, but enough for a slow moving sea hare to get stuck in.

I could probably just wrap some filter floss all around it and secure it with elastic bands, now that I think about it.

I have more than enough hair algae to feed your guy, I am still recovering from a tank crash late last year. Hair algae is about 1/3 of what it was, but still lots.
