Sounds like you need a Durso style standpipe. google Durso, you will find a ton of pictures and writeups how to make them near silent. My Durso on my 45g was pretty close to silent. Herbie is dead silent, but requires 2 holes for drains

My 155 is drilled in the back, 2 overflows what a racket. So I built 2 Hofer Gurgle Busters and that solve the problem. No I can hear if the sump is low and top it up right away.

This is my thread on it and a link to the Hofer build page:

Ok seriously we can't read minds:
  1. What kind of standpipe are you running?
  2. Do you have a hole drilled in the cap? If so what size?
  3. What size is your drain (bulkhead size)?
  4. What size piping is your standpipe made from?
  5. What size pipe did you run for the drain from the tank to the sump?
  6. What size return pump are you running? Estimate on actual flow rate to tank?

I use Durso Standpipes, very easy to put together. Made my 2 overflows silent.

Two drains lines for a Herbie, for one as said Durso, Hofer and also search on Stockman
