yes it is an external skimmer, i was running it internally though.

Were you feeding it with a dedicated pump or from the overflow? I'm looking for something i can use in my sump. Is it good enough for a heavily stocked 180g tank ?

i had it in my 187g with a 25g frag tank, also pretty heavy stocked for a year.
i had a feed pump of 450gph running to it.
