With the paint directly on the back of the tank I have a sneaking suspicion that both matte and gloss will look exactly the same when viewed through water from the front. it's the water-to-glass-to-paint contact that makes it look the same no matter what. Been my experience with the two painted tanks I've had. First being gloss and second being matte.

Also you'll find that the look with black paint is a dark dark gray with water and light on the tank in my experience.
