Yeah Steve our water here on the mainland is pretty good as well. When I was breeding discus a friend who lives in downtown Van sent off a water sample to Mike Wells (a well known and respected Discus breeder) he ran a ton of test on the sample she sent him. His conclusion was, our water is to soft to support life, There is, nothing in it to speak of. I still feel better filtering it though, especially in the spring/summer when pesticides are being sprayed and the air can get heavy with smog.

Steve, I find the same thing. My unit has been putting out at least 5g per day for the last 1.5 years, and the TDS still = 0.

oh yes filter definatly but with a RO. if you have to make one investment that would be it. I think for our water a DI is a waist of money. the one thing we do have in our water is a high algae count because of our year round mild temps.

It's not too bad if you know how to recharge the DI resins. That is if you are comfortable working with the chemicals needed to recharge

Veng, Yeah I've got the link someone else posted, it looks easy enough and I've got both the chemicals needed, I just need to buy some rubber gloves, and wear out my resins..they sure last a good long time.

BCorchidguy......... a bit off topic.......... did you ever mail order discus? I was just wondering which companies are good ones to order from. I've always wanted a Discus tank but I have never gotten around to it.

But since there is room in the living room for it......... I just may set up a 90 gallon discus tank

Cheers,
Vic

Veng I ordered a couple times from Mike Wells, always got bigger fish than I ordered and usually a back up fish just incase something didn't make it. Jack Wattley is also considered one of the better ones.

looked into that also, it realy isn't worth the chemicals, time, and effort to do one at a time. if you had 5 and did 4 at a time it might be different.
