Default MH Canopy

How high does a canopy need to be in order to fit metal halide lights inside?

That is going to depend on your mounting hardware as well as the size of any reflectors. You also have to consider the risk of splashing onto your bulbs. My canopy is 12" and the bulbs are about 4" below the top. Minimum would probably be about 4" without reflectors.

My canopy is 8 1/2" high, and my MH lamp is 5" from the waters surface. It seems to be fine, I clean a bit of salt spray from the lamp about once a month.
I am using a standard mogul socket from J&L.

I made my canopy 14" high with the MH being about 5" from the top of the canopy. I also have mirrored plexiglass mounted in the top of my canopy and have two Ice Cap fans (one at each end) for cooling. So far so good.....nothing has melted yet.
