Default Filters

I purchased a tank some time ago (90 GAL) and it came with a large container full of gravel which was to be used as a filter so I was told. This container is about 20 gallons ,full to the top with gravel. It has an inlet and outlet, obviously meant to have water running through it. Has anyone seen such a filter and if so does it work. Thanks in advance.

Is this a freshwater tank? Is the filter homemade?

If this is to be used as a saltwater tank, then don't use this filter. It is not appropriate.
