how much dose food safe actualy mean. I think if some one has used it for a long time with no ill efect then why not do it your self. I could be totaly out to lunch but if there is no leaching from it even if it is not food safe then wont it work?

The rubbermaid "Brute" garbage cans should be ok for water storage and mixing. Other containers may not be as some have chemical agents such as anti-bacterial or anti-mildew agents.

those are not brute cans though. brute cans are rated "food safe" meaning they won't leach any plastic bi-product into whatever your storing in them. in the case of storing water or saltwater those cans can and probably will leach phosphates overtime meaning that you your water purification process is tainted. phosphates will end up fueling algae growth in the tank.

ruffneck cans = 10 bucks, "brute" cans = 40 bucks at home depot. you certainly don't need to use the brute brand can but you should probably be using some sort of food grade storage container or what’s the point of purifying the water at all?

ultimately i don't really care what you do i was just thinking maybe you didn't know as it looks like you went to a lot of work on this setup. if i ever get some room around here i would like to build a similar setup.
