I do believe leds will penetrate deeper ad they are a more concentrated light source vs. T5. Also different optics will give you more spread or more depth. As for the depth of the tank, a tall tank looks stunning but make sure you are able to get it in it for aquascaping.

My 300 is 30" deep and it is a bit of a pain to work in, I would not recommend going 36". My LEDs are doing great to this depth.
