Doesn't matter, open or not, they're BROWN
   On the more serious not, you didn't post any of your tank specs so pretty hard to diagnose with no info other than they are "1/2 open and seem to be reaching up". Could be water quality, a fish nibbling on it, etc. Who knows without more info on your tank and its inhabitants.
