Now just out of nowhere I have this real deep red/burgundy algae looking stuff to grow. What should I do about it?

Just vaccuum it up with a gravel vac, If you're not using RO/DI water its quite common. I find that I have sometimes have small blooms when it rains a tonne and in the spring due to run off and excess nutrients in the tap water.
