Ouch sorry to hear man! Float valves in the RO reservoir should always be installed in my opinion. This has happened to a lot of people but is totally preventable.

Also, I would not use the float valve as your primary shut off. If you do you will burn out your membrane faster due to small in and off surges due to evap in the reservoir causing the float valve to move frequently. When you are done making RO I would still turn off the source water into your RO unit.
