Hammer drill works best, but depends on how dense/hard the rock is.

Dont apply too much pressure when drilling. Porus liverock can break quite easily.

Get a masonry drill bit, and go slow. It shouldn't split. A wood drill bit will work fine, but not as well as a masonry bit. They are very inexpensive at Home Depot.
