"Gauging Interest"

So when you guys say "guaging interest" you're wondering if someone will pay what you're asking? Is that the deal? I just don't see the point in putting "guaging interest" ...why not just post a price, and see if it sells? I think it's just pointless when almost all of the "guaging interest" threads end in a sale. And it seems like the new in thing around here too.
