on a big tank like yours, i think it would be okay without a lid... maybe. if it does jump out, don't be too surprised. For the first few months upon introduction though, the eel will likely cruise around investigating his new digs and during this time will probably be more likely to try carpet surfing. I dont think eggcrate would cut it since the eel is thin enough that it can just slither through the holes.
