Besides the good advice that you've already received, much of how you set it up will depend upon the intended occupants. By researching their needs, the tank will come together for you.

Snails are an excellent part of the naturally maintained aquarium, just make sure they're compatible with the tank occupants - some love escargot . I have every variety you can imagine if you decide you want them.
