A very fine screen with some filter floss over it might help, but only provided you can remove this for cleaning easily enough? Just a suggestion, but im worried it might plug too quickly with gunk.

Well then, if it's a air driven skimmer, try raising the airstones 3-4". Recirc Venturi, may require more work, likely trying to direct the flow upwards, or relocating the injection point higher.
