Freshwater Red "Lobster" from Pisces would look great in there. Also some smaller schooling fish such as minnows (cheap so if it gets eaten...just buy more).

You could also think about going with Bifrenatus cichlids-- they're cute and small... or maybe something like Lelupi -- or juliedochromis, My advice is if ur going to try and do small cichlids like malawi mbuna or tangynika cichlids, pile ur rock up higher, especially for julies... that would be a cute tank-- add some Java Fern and toss a bunch of different julies in-- that would definitely be neat!
But i also like the idea of rams-- they are sooo pretty-- but then you'll need to soften up the water a bit..etc. best of luck!

FYI - listen to what Muck is saying, Mbuna & Aulonocara are simply not suited to a tank with that dimensions. (and that includes A. cobue)
