Simple set-ups have one big advantage....there's less to go wrong!

As far as additives go, you shouldn't need them unless you need to dose calcium, etc. for high consumption in stony coral tanks. In all other cases, regular water changes should provide everything your tank needs. Otherwise, you're just deviating further from natural seawater in a hobby where we try to replicate nature as closely as possible.
