I pretty much asked the same question about a year ago.

A closed loop is basically pumping water out of the main tank and then back into the main tank. A continuous "loop" that is closed (ie: not open to anything else, like a sump). The purpose is for water circulation.

A sump return, which is what I think you are looking for here based on your first post, is just that....ie: the pump used to return water from the sump back to the main tank.

As for pump recommendations....sorry....I don't have enough experience with various types to offer an opinion. For my return I just use an AquaClear 901, which is essentially a big honkin' powerhead.
