I thought the same way about some of the other LED fixtures out there but once I got into the design of my DIY it was clear to me that it was the way to go, for me anyways. I was able to add way more LEDs, mix up the colors and control each color independently. Plus I can add more LEDs anytime I want at a fraction of the price compared to the factory fixtures.
But that's just my 2 cent for what is worth around here
