Do you have this flow control valve setup on yours?
Grey piece attaches to the pump  :UPDATE:LOL After investigating, I pulled the output hose off. What a difference, the skimmer is not near as sensitive and it is no longer leaking at the knob. I do not have this limiting valve so I am going to enquire about that. Still be interested in hearing how you make out!
