Comets are commonly sold as feeder fish, and are small and extremely cheap to buy. They're the ones that get the biggest, along with shubunkin which are more colourful but are still flat-bodied. Comets and shubunkin are also powerful swimmers, so they need high water movement.

Actually had an indoor GF pond at one point. Loved those GF, too. Very friendly, especially at feeding time Haven't restored the original GF website yet, but here are a few photos of the indoor pond and of some of the fish:

Not to step in on Bev but my goldfish are in the pond all year ... a buddy of mine turned me onto a " trough heater " sold in farm stores to heat water troughs for horses ... it is basically a round float with the heating elements hanging below the surface ... I added it last year and I think the goldfish actually gained weight over the winter

Yup, especially in your location where it doesn't freeze very hard or long, not like here where it's iceberg city

You must have a lfs that specializes in koi or goldfish, or even someplace that will sell pond building supplies that can help you out with the specifics of building a suitable outdoor pond that will overwinter your GF. At colder temps, the fish go into a dormant state, so they aren't fed at that time.

Most outdoor ponds have serious filtration systems to handle the large bioload. There's really a lot to an outdoor pond. It's something I'd never do because of the complexity of it.
