Don't mind my naivety here, but do you tamper with them to black out the background?

I darkened the rock on the bottom left corner of the first photo a little, as it was distracting. I also cloned out bubbles, and other minor distractions. The black background is produced by an external flash set at a high power and a narrow beam.
