Default Anyone have a tank without snails?

I took Leanne's chocolate chip star.. I put him in a tank without coral, just two fish, and a pile of snails. I caught him devouring the last snail today. He is beautiful, but there is no way I can keep something that eats my cleaning crew =( He loves mysis, and will bend down to eat it... but I guess he really likes shell sucking o_O

As he is rather large, I doubt he woudl be happy in a small tank.

Beth

I read somewhere that if you can count the number of snails in your tank, you don't have enough.

Just curious,How big is quite large?I was going to take that starfish at one time and never got around to it.I have one right now in a 10 gallon all by his self and he seems to be loving it.I can't say things will stay that way,but for now he is the king of his castle.

I never notice any snails disappearing when he was in "general pop".However quite a few of my hermits disappeared.

correct me if i am wrong, but arent chocolate chip starfish quite aggressive? I have heard that they eat coral, inverts, and sometimes even other starfish.

Yes quite destructive apparently. That's why this particular starfish has had such a hard time finding a permanent home. Beth aren't you the third or fourth owner?

I already have two in my inwall tank or I would take him. They are my substitute for snails (trigger).

As to their destructiveness, it must vary and depend on what you keep. They haven't bothered any of the coral I keep in that tank whatsoever. It is a rubble bottomed tank and they spend most of their time on the bottom or the glass.

He has munched corals, within 2 minutes of putting him in the tank, he was in a 10 gallon, but was unhappy and always moving about.. he is about the size of my hand spread. As neat as it is to watch him engulf a snail... I really dont have another tank to put him in that he wont end up eating something.

If no one wants him, he will become food for someones harlequin.

Yeah Beth you are the fourth owner (Owner #1, a customer apparently that bought at LFS must of found out its wasn't reef safe (must of ate something in his tank ) and when was told he couldn't get his money back he threw it back at the store, Keep it kinda thing. Owner #2 owner LittleBoyBlue, worked at pet store took home. Owner Sucker #3 Me, ate almost anything it could get in its mouth. Come to think of it, this Starfish wrapped around a sea urchin and sucked the life outta him, not to mention a aray of corals. Owner # 4 - Beth, well you guys got that part.

Although beautiful orange colored don't let that fool yeah, he can really boggie to eat things and keeps getting bigger. As much as I liked the beautiful B@stard and hate to see him go ........Hey rodsboys, you did say you wanted him before. Hey...here's your chance again, GO FOT IT!
