I was told you need MHs for good coral growth is this true or can you get away with compact flourance?

You can also go with T5's. I've seen lots of SPS tanks using only High output T5's on various forums.

I have both and the MH has amazing growth my 65W PC will maintain life but nothing really grows except coraline but it will keep lower light corals alive.

Depends on the coral. For softies and some LPS, PCs will grow fine. But for SPS you definitely need MH or T5-HO.
