I emptied my old 33Gal FW today to plumb it into my SW setup and discovered (as I had forgotten) that it had been previously drilled in the bottom. This hole has been covered over with a square piece of glass siliconed all along the bottom and along the four edges.

I'm wondering what my best options would be here. Should I try to remove the piece? Is there a good way to do it? Or am I risking crack ing the base where the hole is? Or should I get a diamond bit for my dremel and drill through the 2nd piece using the existing hole as a guide? Any tips?

go at it with a razor..resilicone the original stuff if you feel you've wrecked the seal..since it's on the bottom you can use a ton of silicone without having to worry about it "looking pretty"

The razor thing is really hard, I can't even seem to get the razor between the 2 pieces of glass. Even if I do get it, it will only go in as far as the razor will reach. So it won't be able to cut all the silicone.

home despots/rona/home hardware/totem etc sell a cable cutter in the tile aisle - works great for these types of projects.

Make sure you remove all the silicone where the bulkhead will sit - take your time, do it right, you don't want the leak. Andy |
