Switching salt mix?
Hey all
I have heard it can be bad for a tank to switch salt brands.. Does this have any truth to it? I currently use instant ocean and want to switch. |

Dez, who has one of the nicer tanks here, regularly switches salt in his tank. To be safe, I'd start with maybe a smaller WC than usual, but people do change salt.

I agree. Salt mixes have different element levels so I would think switching every few pails would be good for the tank. Like mentioned just be cautious and start small.

Also, if you want to, you can mix the two salts for a couple water changes to ease into it

Anything you change in a reef tank should be gradual but when it comes to water changes they are typically in the 10% range so I would consider that pretty gradual already. I've switched brands multiple times without issue.
