I am in the market for a new camera, I am leaning towards a Canon powershot S3 IS. Does anyone know of any other cameras similar to this that I should maybe looking at.

My recent upgrade was in the same ballpark- fujifilm Finepix s5200. Definitely worth consideration... I'm not thrilled with the manual focus on the S5200 but if I recall the manual focus on the canon S3 was basically the same (if not minimally ergonomically easier). However the canon was 150$ more at the time.

Unrelated, but I see this frags.org icon seems to be spreading.

I have an S3 IS. I've had it since september and taken close to 1000 shots with it.
It is a slightly bigger camera than many of the other models in the price range, but the zoom and macro are both amazing. Battery life is also better than I had expected.

I got the Sony DSLR A100 and love it.

A little on the pricey side though.

Hi Joe Reefer,

I don't know if you're set on Canon. But may I offer a suggestion. I know the Canon S3 IS is not exactly a compact camera so you may want to move towards a full on DSLR. It's a much better investment. If you don't have lot of experience shooting in manual mode..SLR these days can still provide an auto shot setting. For the price I would go with a cheap slr body such as a Nikon d40 and the Phoenix 100mm 1:1 Macro lense. If your into Canon, I'm sure they have a cheap dslr body as well..and the Phoenix also come in Canon mount. The Ultra Zoom feature won't provide the same sort of benift a true 1:1 macro will give you. At 100mm..you can hit a lot of depth.

Here are some specs

Nikon D40:

with this budget macro lense that is at 100mm length..perfect for reef tanks...and it's tack sharp and is really inexpensive for a SLR lense:

Edit: My bad..this set up will cost 800-900 dollar..might be significantly more than what you are willing to spend. This is a great budget setup for macro photography though.

The macro is great. I'll try to remember to post some of my macro shots when I get home.

If you need to find out more about Digital Camera or Digital SLR review, which one is good from the fans and expert photographer.. try go to " www.dpreview.com " and go to the Forum there. I usually hang around there asking expert and professional photographer for opinion, trick and how to take a good picture. It's a cool place to learn about all the digital Camera out there.

Personally I love Olympus for the color output as most photographer know the color quality of it.
