A pic of your sump might trigger a few ideas. Also could you be sucking air in the return anywhere??

I use a filter sock on the output of my skimmers and returns from the tank.
They work great for controlling microbubbles. I have to change them out for a clean set once a week.

Would this work without a gatevalve mod?

Just because the outlet tube is vertical and the water exits the top. Would you have to re-plumb it ?

Could you add an elbow or two to the top to give you a place to hang a bag? Or do the gate valve mod, you don't have to buy the ASM kit you can get the parts yourself at somewhere like Western Pump.

http://www.asmskimmer.com/mod1.htm

Like they say the PVC gate valve is the hardest to find but I'm using a slice gate valve on my CS8-3 and it's working fine.
