Default Buying new digital cam- need advice

So my Olympus 4000c went in for the 4th repair and now futureshop is crediting me a new camera of equal value. The Olympus was $800 3 years ago. That should leave me with about $400 credit. So here's what I am thinking.. I will spend anywhere from $500-$800 and I want a camera that can do at least 800 ISO and work fully manually. I'll be using it for some tank photography, lots of live band photography and various other stuff... Anyone here have any advice on what company to go for? I will never ever use Olympus again in my life.

thanks,

-Adam

nikon

konica minota is good too. for $500-800 i'm sure you can find a decent lower end SLR camera somewhere..I was thinking a nikon d50, but they're msrp is $899 :|

if you like a nice camera, a little on the bulky side, canon powershot "S2 IS" is very flexible, downside is it doesn't do iso800.

might want to save up maybe for a nice SLR, either nikon d50 or canon rebel xt..I believe you'll never regret buying an SLR if you do!

i have a conon power shot A75, it is OK but it does not do really close ups very well or i have not figured it out yet. i would go to a camera shop and talk to an expert. maybe they would have somer that you could try out. i know that there is a camera store on fort street right beside the eatons centre.

SLR seem to be the higher end manual ones? What does slr stand for?

here's what they have at FS:

I could maybe afford the Pentax...

Adam: I edited your link to show as a little smaller, it's still the same link but this way it's not throwing off the horizontal scroll. -Tony

SLR stand for Single lens reflex or somthing like that, that is the kind of camera im looking at getting right now, but i really like photography. It can be used like any other Digital camera but it has changeable lenses for different situations. can be akward for someone not looking for that route of photography.

Adam, I would look hard at Fuji they make some nice stuff, as for SLR, unless you want to be able to buy lenses and spend another fortune and have a camera case like a suitcase stay away from them. My Fuji is one step below the SLR.

you want something in the 5mp and over range and you want a good macro feature and ability to use filters. I think the Fuji S5200 would be a good choice

or the S9000, if you can find it on sale or at a low enuf price for your budget

Sort of. For practical purposes this is "correct enough" these days, but if you "really" want to get all geeky, SLR meaning single-lens-reflex refers only to the fact that the lens is used both for capturing the image as well as the viewfinder (as opposed to having a secondary optic for the viewfinder), and doesn't really refer to the lenses being modular and exchangeable. Although people seem to use the term to refer to that style of camera these days. But there you have it, a little piece of trivia you can use to impress your friends with.

If you are defiantly looking at SLRs I would stay away from Pentax. But you are going to spend more that $800.00. Do you have to use the Credit at Future Shop, If so you are kinda stuck with what they sell. But if not..
I would look at Canon 20D or Nikon D70 or 70s. Nikon just released a new SLR called the 200D you may want to hold off a month or so to see the realignment of prices for the D70. Also if you can wait maybe Boxing Day would be a good day to spend your credit.
If $800.00 is you max and SLR isn't that important I would look at
Canon Powershot A620
or the
Sony DSC-R1

Im pretty sure those cameras are going to be way out of his/her price range. both those cost around 1500.
